General Statement of Duties
Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with disabilities such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports. Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level, subject, skill or specialty oriented. Works within a team or departmental setting but may work independently in a unique teaching specialty.
Essential Duties
This employee designs and implements instruction for students with disabilities. The incumbent is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating individual educational programs for students based on individual student needs and the goals and objectives of the Henrico County School Board and administration.
  • Communicates with parents, students, outside agencies and other professionals.
  • Develops IEPs for students that comply with HCPS and VDOE regulations and guidelines
  • Maintains student caseload in regard to compliance with IEP development and three year re-evaluations, communication and consultation with other teachers and related service providers (e.g., student accommodations, SOL testing information)
  • Gathers ongoing instructional and behavioral data
  • Plans and adjusts daily instructional and behavioral programs based on data
  • Provides necessary supports for toileting, feeding, and/or mobility needs as required
  • Assesses student progress and reports to parents, at minimum, through quarterly IEP progress reports
  • Requisitions material and equipment and performs other clerical tasks required
  • Implements instruction and behavior management
  • Facilitates IEP meetings for caseload students using established HCPS meeting protocol
  • Functions as a member of a professional team
  • Carries out transition activities with parents and other professionals, as needed
  • Plans, directs, and evaluates the work of an instructional assistant
  • Uses IEP software
  • Utilizes a virtual platform for instruction (when needed)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices (reinforcement, prompting, visual schedules, antecedent based intervention, etc.). Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work. Demonstrates understanding of functions of behavior and is knowledgeable of interventions matched to each. Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Knowledge of special education laws, policies and practices. Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software.
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in special education. Master's degree in special education preferred.
Additional Information
This posting is for the 2024-25 school year.
The minimum salary for this 209-day position is $54,602 with a bachelor's degree or $57,223 with a master's. This salary is based upon the 2023-24 budget and is subject to change based upon the approval of the 2024-25 budget. The annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date. Should the start date be set for January 1, 2024 or after, the contract that will be issued will be an annual contract effective for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year only.
