 Histology Lab Aide 

Job Summary:Responsible for performing pre-analytic general laboratory procedures in the laboratory. 

Location: Tinley Park, IL

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Performs all listed duties to support technical lab staff:
    1. Monitoring consumable reagent and preparing new reagents.
    2. Creates patient slides for all manual and automatic staining procedures to be done on specimens that are processed by technical staff. 
    3. Performs manual cover slipping technique of all stained per departmental standard operating procedures. 
    4. Performs routine H/E staining and specialized staining utilizing the Nexus Special Stainer and Benchmark Ultra.
    5. Reviews all completed cases for accuracy and delivers to appropriate physician. 
    6. Accepts inventory items according to departmental protocol. 
    7. Records/documents all shipments 
  • Maintains the department physical appearance to ensure safety and enhance workflow:
    1. Replenishes daily consumable items as needed or at the end of shift. (e.g., plastic test tubes, gauzes, pipette tips, slides, etc.)
    2. Notifies supervisor or designee of inventory needs.
    3. Maintains a clean/disinfected laboratory environment.
  • Performs quality control measures as set forth by departmental standard operating procedures:
    1. Records/documents temperature of routine histology equipment.
    2. Performs/documents all incoming inventory shipments in designated log. 
  • Demonstrates quality customer service through positive interaction which meets the needs of co-workers, clients, and vendors.
  • Adheres to all regulatory, institutional, and departmental policies to ensure laboratory accreditation. 
  • Participates in the validation of laboratory methods and procedures to meet the changing health care needs of our patients. 
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the manager to support the department mission of service to patients and to provide quality diagnostic information.
  • Adheres to all regulatory and laboratory safety policies (OSHA) to provide a safe and secure environment for fellow employees. 

Experience and Education: 

  • Bachelors degree in the chemical, physical, or biology science 
  • 1 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred 
  • Works under ASCP certified technician 

Registration, Licensure and Certification 

  • Not required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Working experience with laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to ambulate throughout the lab.
  • Personal computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse patient population and all levels of personnel.
