Since 1967, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. We currently have an exciting full time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a Regional Representative.in our Northwest Region. The Regional Representative is responsible for collaborating and providing technical assistance and consultationwith vocational rehabilitation and services for the blind & visually impaired.

This position is remote and the candidate can be located in the state of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska.  This position requires significant travel throughout the states assigned within that region (AK, ID, OR, WA,) and to HKNC headquarters (Sands Point, NY) as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with consumers, VR and services for the blind, state DeafBlind projects, and community partners to identify DeafBlind youth and adults for inclusion in the HKNC National Registry;
  • Facilitate the application process for individuals to HKNC for virtual and/or on-site assessment and/or training and facilitate coordination of transition back/follow up services to their community of choice;
  • Provide information, advocacy and referral to local services for individuals and their families to maximize opportunities that are accessible;
  • Coordinate and/or provide professional development training/resources to increase the number of qualified service providers (targeted, universal and intensive);
  • Offer and provide business relations and consultation services for employers to recruit, hire and retain qualified employees, develop employee retention strategies, and learn about work-site related accommodations; 
  • Work with HKNC and community-based teams to support consumers with achieving their quality of life and employment goals;
  • Assist with National DeafBlind Equipment Distribution Program (NDBEDP) capacity building within the region;
  • Support the development and provision of employment training services to VR consumers in the state through the services of the Deaf-Blind Specialist; manage state contract and reporting responsibilities;
  • Provide consultation, support, and training to/on behalf of individuals age 55 and older service providers in collaboration with HKNC Senior Adult Specialist;
  • Provide consultation, support, and training to/on behalf of transition-age young adults in collaboration with their families and community partners including, but not limited to: educators, vocational rehabilitation counselors, Pre-ETS transition specialists, state deaf-blind projects, and the National Center on Deaf Blindness FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: BUDGET
  • Responsible for program and/or project budgets.
  • Responsible for the development of budgets in accordance with the strategic parameters set forth by HKS and accountable for meeting financial expectations for the programs/departments under his/her control. 
  • Accountable for achieving program goals in a cost-effective and efficient manner to meet or exceed budget expectations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree preferred in Rehabilitation Counseling or a closely related degree. 
  • Preference given to an individual with five or more years full-time vocational rehabilitation work experience with individuals who are DeafBlind.

LANGUAGE / COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Fluency in a wide-variety of communication methods and adaptations used by youth and adults, who are DeafBlind, (including, but not limited to):

  • American Sign Language
  • Sign language, in English word order

Familiarity with devices and technology used by DeafBlind people (including, but not limited to): VP/VRS, low vision aids, braille devices, hearing aids, CCTV, PowerPoint and LCD.
