DEPARTMENT: Bridges

REPORTS TO: Bridges Program Director

SALARY: $21.00/hour

HOURS: Part Time, up to 20 hours per week, Monday - Friday; late afternoon - evening

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) is a subcontractor with Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) in offering academic and enrichment programming at their FamilySource Centers (FSC) in Watts and Southeast Los Angeles. HOLA’s programming at the FSCs is a modified replication of the HOLA Bridges program developed and operated at HOLA’s main campus. 

HOLA Bridges is an after-school program designed to support a successful transition through middle school to high school with a special focus on academics and interest exploration through a variety of experiences, reflection, and leadership opportunities. Students are given personalized support as they build the skills necessary to be ready for college & career. 


POSITION SUMMARY

The HOLA Bridges FSC Site Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing academic support and enrichment activities at WLCAC’s FSC site in collaboration with HOLA’s Bridges Program Director. Duties include planning, coordinating, overseeing, and leading HOLA classes and program activities. The functions include curriculum development and delivery; coordination of tutoring efforts, academic support & enrichment programming, and maintaining accurate records for reporting of all programmatic activities to the Bridges Program Director and FSC staff. 


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and coordinate enrichment classes per session for middle school and high school students
    • Collaborate with Bridges Program Director on developing workshop series led by HOLA Teaching Artists, Program Staff and Volunteers - designing workshop series to comply with FSC requirements as well as HOLA’s programmatic goals
    • Support Teaching Artists, including helping with timesheet compliance and classroom management as needed.
    • Substitute for Teaching Artists when needed
  • Track student participation & progress and provide accurate reporting to HOLA & FSC staff
    • Communicate all student, family and faculty concerns and challenges with Bridges Program Director & FSC Staff
    • Oversee the organization of HOLA’s College Corner equipment and supplies. Order new supplies and process reimbursements
    • Organize and distribute incentives to students and their families in coordination with FSC staff - order replacement supplies when necessary
    • Assist in coordinating field trips, including chaperoning
    • Provide academic support for middle school and high school students
    • Help assess the needs of students; including developing and implementing academic assignments for students to improve academic performance and enhance their learning and interest in academic subjects 
    • Coordinate with FSC staff to collect, review and report on student grades throughout the academic year (progress reports and report cards)
    • Assist students in developing an academic plan based on the completion of A-G requirements as well as maintaining passing grades
    • Implement various age-appropriate activities for youth, grades 6th - 12th and help create and foster a positive academic/career-enriching environment for all
    • Prepare and teach two weekly enrichment classes focusing on college & career interests and readiness
    • Guide students in discovering & developing their interests and abilities using a range of assessments, interviews, and reflective activities
    • Coordinate and supervise volunteers & interns assigned to Bridges department by WLCAC & HOLA
    • Track student participation accurately including sign in/attendance sheets, fulfilling administrative and programming needs
    • Keep programming calendar up-to-date, sharing in various formats to insure awareness of participants, families and staff
    • Coordinate academic tutors regarding specific academic concerns, needs and plans for all students
    • Facilitate small groups and/or one-on-one reading and math comprehension sessions for students who require additional support in those areas when necessary.
    • Coordinate with FSC staff to communicate student academic progress with parents and assist with communication between families, youth & FSC staff
    • Participate in meetings with parents as needed
    • Help students plan for summer activities: summer classes, internships, job opportunities, etc.
    • Maintain knowledge of current educational issues/trends
  • Support policies and procedures for HOLA activities ensuring compliance with HOLA and WLCAC standards
  • Collaborate with Bridges Program Director & WLCAC Staff to share knowledge of community needs and culturally-appropriate service delivery
  • Establish positive and meaningful relationships with the students and families served at the site

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend Bridges department meetings
  • Flexibility and availability to work some late evenings and/or weekends
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Act as a strong role model for youth during all working hours
  • Maintain professionalism in relationships with participants (non-fraternization)

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Two years of experience working in a youth development program - knowledge and experience with positive youth development framework is ideal
  • Project management or coordination experience
  • Familiarity with the South Central/Watts neighborhoods and communities
  • Excellent verbal communication skills characterized by an ability to find common ground and generate shared excitement around goals
  • Mastery of A-G framework and college eligibility requirements
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
    • Ability to generate professional communications as well as edit/give feedback to students regarding written materials covering spelling, grammar, and composition
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Must pass CA DOJ background check
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in a busy work environment

VACCINATION POLICY

Heart of Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law. New hires working at Heart of Los Angeles must be fully vaccinated no later than 60 days after hire and submit to additional masking and social distancing requirements. Employees must also receive an updated COVID-booster shot 10 days after becoming eligible for it. Please contact HOLA’s Human Resources Department for a copy of the vaccination policy.
