JOB DESCRIPTION
Certifying Scientist I
Reports To: Laboratory Manager
Manages People: No
Experience: Typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.
Level of Supervision: Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work
Job Summary:
The Certifying Scientist I handles all infectious disease testing with a goal of providing 100%
accuracy when processing all samples and reporting results to clients. Reporting of infectious
disease bacterial, viral, and fungal infections accurately and within a timely fashion.
Essential Responsibilities/Duties:
• Performing sample prep and DNA extraction.
• Running the KingFisher Flex, Accufill and QuantStudio 12K, and QuantStudio 5.
• Performing manual pipetting steps with small volumes.
• Performing nucleic acid extractions and RT-PCR reactions.
• Analysing and closing patient reports, specifically COVID, UTI, RPP and STI.
• Flagging critical results based on microbes detected, age specific criteria, and facility criteria.
• Ability to troubleshoot and implement corrective action on QC failures.
• Timely responses with email communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Education:
▪ Master of Science in Biological or Chemical Sciences (biology, microbiology, molecular
biology – preferred) – required
▪ Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, molecular biology – preferred
Competencies/Skills:
▪ Ability to work independently and strong attention to detail.
▪ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
▪ Strong analysis and problem-solving skills.
▪ Proficient in performing sample processing.
▪ Proficient in running the KingFisher Flex, Accufill, QuantStudio 12K, QuantStudio 5.
▪ Proficient in basic maintenance of all lab machinery.
▪ Proficient in serial dilutions, small volume pipetting, and PCR procedures.
Experience:
▪ Necessary coursework for Infectious Disease Certifying Scientist duties.
Certifications/Licenses:
▪ Medical Technologist - preferred
