The Aquatics Department Lead is responsible for lifeguarding, planning, overseeing, scheduling and supervising the daily operations of the aquatic areas and staff, equipment and designs, implements, and evaluates aquatic sessions/classes for a diversified member population by performing the following duties.

• Instructs individuals or groups on proper swimming techniques and pool safety by following the responsibilities of a lifeguard.
• Monitors pool(s) for purposes of maintaining safety when members and guests are participating in group or individual aquatic exercise.
• Knowledgeable of pool schedules, sessions/classes, programming, and rules, promptly answers questions on pool operation for members and guests.
• Develop, market and implement new aquatic sessions/classes and medically based aquatic sessions/classes and activities to increase member participation and retention to achieve participation and department revenue goals.
• Serves as a liaison from members and participants to instructors throughout aquatic sessions/classes. Resolve and respond to issues/complaints involving staff and members.
• Maintains the hourly count of people in the pools.
• Serves as a resource to staff before, during, and after sessions/classes.
• Oversees, implements and follows emergency plans, including evacuation routes from the pool area.
• Maintain awareness of all participant's age and skill levels in order to adjust any class to suit participants without prior knowledge.
• Maintains records and reports for each class and/or participant; must properly complete and file records of activity for commission compensation.
• Makes sure the deck is kept free of debris, hazards and puddles and all equipment is properly stored.
• Schedules aquatic staff and makes arrangements when staff is absent.
• Implements and maintains monthly schedules for aquatic staff.
• Participates in regular in-service training and staff meetings.
• Onboard new hires, supervises, schedules, trains, and evaluates assigned aquatic department staff.
• Maintains pool facilities including, but not limited to, cleanliness of pools and decks, pool bulletin board, communications, water balance, temperature, pumps, filters, chlorinators, and assures all pool policies and procedures are implemented and followed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Health or fitness-related undergraduate degree in an Exercise Science or health/fitness-related degree program required; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Minimum of two (2) years of lifeguard experience; minimum of two (2) years experience in instruction; minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience supporting direct reports; AFAA or AEA certified required; Lifeguard Certification (must be approved by HPA President) or Fundamentals of YMCA Swim Lessons training or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification; Certified Pool Operator certification required within three (3) months of hire.
