Description

Job Summary: To record electrical activity arising from the brain, central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems using techniques such as electroencephalography, (EEG), nerve condition studies (NCS), somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), and visual evoked potentials (VEP). To provide training to lower-level technologists. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Job Description: Knowledge of the functions and disorders of the nervous system and the principles and practical applications of neurodiagnostic testing. Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, family members, and staff. Ability to recognize normal and abnormal electrical activity. Ability to comprehend computer averaging and data acquisition.

Responsibilities:

  •  Develops a rapport with patients and explains testing procedures to the patient; prepares patient for testing.
  •  Obtains and records patient medical history.
  •  Elicits and records electrical potentials and interprets responses for review by a neurologist.
  •  Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment problems to supervisor.
  •  Performs long-term EEG/video monitoring in accordance with established procedures; transcribes digital EEG data.
  • Trains subordinates; promotes continuous improvement in safety, environmental, and/or infection control practices and procedures.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree with two years in Neurodiagnostics (EEG/EMG).

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (ABRET), American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologist (AAET), or equivalent registration
