DENTAL ASSISTANT

The Dental Assistants purpose is responsible for assisting the dentist(s) and dental hygienist(s) in the direct provision of primary care dental services to the patients of the clinic. The Dental Assistant is also responsible for the sterilization, preparation and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies.

Job Description

This job requires an individual with attention to detail, great organization skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, exceptional time management skills, and ability to multi-task and organize work effectively, ability to work independently and as a cooperative team member. Requires a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings. Knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs as well as current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on primary health care.

Patient-Centered Medical Home Job Responsibilities

1.Patient Population Management:

a.Maintains a list of all Dental Department patients, monitors patient flow, and assists the Dental Director, Dentist(s), and dental hygienist(s) in assuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.

b.Receives and places necessary phone calls consistent with professional matters, clinic business and patient care of the Dental Department.

2.Care Coordination:

a.Assists Dentist(s) and Dental hygienist(s) with the care of patients.

b.Sets up trays with exam supplies and equipment for Dentist(s) and Dental Hygienist(s).

c.Prepares operatory equipment for patient treatment per Dental Department protocols and the Dentist(s) or Dental Hygienist(s) directions.

d.Takes patient X-Rays; exposes and develops dental radiographs.

e.Sterilizes all reusable dental instruments and equipment in accordance with the Dental Department directive and protocol.

f.Insures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directive and clinic policy as well as state and federal regulations.

g.Maintains all Dental Department equipment in accordance with manufacturers directions and Dental Department policy and protocol.

h.Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering their questions and giving directions to patients as authorized by the dentist or dental hygienist.

i.Keeps clean and maintains Dental Department areas in accordance with Dental Department procedures such as infection control, exposure control and safety.

j.Ensures adequate operatory supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.

Additional Essential Functions include the following.

1.Pulls and files patient charts as required.

2.Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by the Dentist in accordance with Dental Department protocols and directive and in accordance with state and federal regulations.

3.Changes water in the autoclave as needed.

4.Performs weekly maintenance on various machines and equipment in the dental office including waterlines, O-rings, oil collectors, vacuums and traps.

5.Assists with various clinical and administrative functions of the clinic as appropriate and time permits.

1.Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 1.Completion of accredited course in dental assisting required.

2.Have a positive, friendly and professional demeanor with excellent interpersonal skills.

3.Assist with gathering data and inputting data into databases.

4.Strong computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office Suite.

5.Attention to detail and ability to compose and generate documents and reports.

6.Ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable populations including those made vulnerable by their financial status, personality characteristics, place of residence, health status and/or age.

7.Ability to work productively with internal and external customers.

8.Adept at working well with team members.

9.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

10.Ability to multi-task and organize work effectively while working independently and/or as a cooperative team member.

11.Remain flexible to with stand unpredictable changes to workflow and schedules.

12.Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality in regards to HCC matters.
