Career Opportunity: Health Information Specialist - The Healthcare Connection - Cincinnati, OH
What is the role of our Health Information Specialist?
The Health Information Specialist position performs the duties required to manage the back-office operations of the health center. Provides excellent service to patients, staff, and visitors by answering telephones, and assisting with the clerical duties associated with a fast-paced office environment. Plays a vital role in making timely linkages for patients in need of referrals for specialty consultations and imaging/diagnostics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Answers telephone calls in a professional and timely manner. Directs calls to the appropriate party and/or tasks clear and concise messages via the EHR.
2. Schedules patient appointments for follow-ups, late arrivals, and assists nursing staff with rescheduling patient appointments due to provider absences.
3. Assists with reminder calls to patients.
4. Assists service area staff by faxing and receiving incoming information, distributing mail, and processing requests.
5. Obtains immunization records per patient/customer request.
6. Scans and indexes pertinent information into the EHR.
7. Processes requests for Release of Medical Records.
8. Assists providers with patient requests for the completion of external forms within the timeframe established by The HealthCare Connection.
9. Works independently and collaboratively as part of a team to ensure the timely processing of patient referrals for specialty services and imaging/diagnostics.
10. Maintains an electronic log of all referrals.
11. Assists patients as needed in scheduling initial specialty appointments.
12. Responsible for obtaining prior authorization from patients’ insurance carrier as needed and documenting them in the EHR. Handled by nursing staff
13. Tracks all data from referrals in the electronic health record. Provides ad-hoc reports on status of referrals upon request.
14. Obtains consultation reports and results of diagnostics/imaging and ensures that they are in the patients’ medical record.
15. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.

This position requires work in an office setting.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED required.
WORK EXPERIENCE
A minimum of six (6) months experience in a hospital, ambulatory care or other like medical-type facility.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to electronic health record software.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Demonstrated skills for the position including ability to multitask, excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent customer relation skills, attention to detail, and problem solving. Able to work cohesively and encourage a teamwork environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) or more years of experience in a hospital, ambulatory care or other like medical-type facility.
