Job SummaryThe Medical Physicist 2 helps ensure radiation safety practices are followed, evaluates and assesses radiology equipment for quality, ensuring the systems are meeting manufacturer specifications and State of Texas regulations. Performs dosimetry evaluations, audits, or calculations on imaging equipment in radiology and nuclear medicine. May serve as Radiation Safety Officer for the entity.
Essential Functions Of The RoleServes as the primary physicist and contact for designated sites.
Individual may have Diagnostic Radiological Physics and/or Medical Nuclear Physics responsibilities.
Carries out the responsibilities and duties of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), Certificate of X-Ray Registration requirements and relevant Texas Regulations required in the absence of the RSO.
Assists in development and evaluation of radiation safety procedures and practices to ensure good radiation practice and to minimize radiation exposure to patients and medical personnel.
Researches, develops and implements image quality standards and procedures for current and newly acquired imaging systems, as new technology upgrades are incorporated into existing systems, or to improve quality testing methods of currently installed equipment.
Conducts performance and image quality evaluations of x-ray (fluoroscopy, radiography, digital radiography, bone density, computed tomography), computed radiography, MRI and ultrasound equipment, following guidance from the latest standards and regulations, and works with various personnel to troubleshoot and evaluate image quality and technical quality problems.
Performs dosimetry calculations and measurements of patient and public exposure levels to ensure regulatory standards are met and doses minimized.
Performs shielding calculations, measurements and makes recommendations on room layouts.
Performs quarterly medical physicist reviews (quarterly audits) in order to ensure compliance with regulatory radiation safety requirements and acceptable standards of practice in handling, administering, and disposing of radioactive materials.
Serves as an instructor for staff, physicians, residents, fellows, and technologists. Serves as a mentor to temporary licensed and unlicensed medical physicists.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORSKnowledge of radiation safety practices commonly found in federal and state regulations and accreditation rules.
Able to conduct audits to assess appropriate compliance with radiation safety practices commonly found in federal and state regulations and accreditation rules.
Able to conduct performance evaluations of patient imaging equipment.
Able to communicate appropriate radiation safety concerns to the facilities in a manner that will facilitate improvements.
Able to effectively communicate about radiation safety related topics with patients and staff including conducting in-services and seminars.
Able to take call, if required.
Certification by the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine or the American Board of Health Physics or the American Board of Medical Physics or the Board of Laser Safety.
Licensed as Medical Physicist by the Texas Medical Board within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications
  • EDUCATION - Masters'
  • MAJOR - Physics or Related Field
  • EXPERIENCE - 2 Years of Experience
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION
  • Board Certified (BC): Certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board Science of Nuclear Medicine or American Board of Health Physics.
  • Medical Physicist (LMP): Licensed as Medical Physicist by the Texas Medical Board within 90 days of hire.
