Hazel's Expedited Freight - Non-Driver is Hiring an Assistant General Manager Near Carrollton, TX

Company Overview

Since 1977, Hazel's has been recognized as an established leader in the expedited freight industry. Hazel's has a long and impressive track record of serving the transportation needs of thousands of customers ranging from small local companies to Fortune 100 companies. We work with manufacturing companies, public utilities, parts suppliers, and everything in between.

At Hazel’s we provide point-to-point courier and delivery services, scheduled same day deliveries, expedited “hot shot” deliveries, and over-the-road long-distance transport services. We also offer air freight forwarding services and air charters when ground transport isn’t fast enough for time-critical deliveries.

Hazel’s is based in Dallas, Texas and has additional terminals in Houston, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio/Austin. We currently have Drivers stationed throughout Texas and the surrounding states.

Job Description

This position is a salaried position with significant upside bonus potential. This individual must live in or around San Antonio and must have management experience in the freight industry. This person will have complete authority for all operations in San Antonio and Austin and will report directly to the COO. This position will handle all local Human Resource issues and will be responsible for recruiting, hiring, and performance management of local Terminal Drivers. This person will also interact directly with Customers and is expected to be able to represent Hazel’s on Sales/Customer service calls as necessary. This position will also need to trouble shoot any local issues that may arise. This job will require 40-60 hours per week and this person is expected to be “on-call” 24 hours a day to trouble shoot any issues that come up.

Candidates must have freight experience and operations/management experience. The ideal candidate will be computer savvy, and will have experience in running a Terminal and in Dispatching.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversight of all daily operations of the business, including but not limited to:
  • Recruiting, Interviewing, Hiring, Performance Management & Termination of Dispatchers, Office Staff, Warehouse Staff, and Drivers.
  • Setting Dispatcher Schedules & Managing Sick/Vacation Time.
  • Training Dispatchers & Drivers on how to follow Hazel’s policies and procedures.
  • Customer issue & problem resolution with a maniacal focus on customer service.
  • This includes contacting customers and negotiating compensation/resolution for failed or late deliveries and ensuring the customer will continue to use Hazel’s.
  • Approval & oversight of “one-off” price discounts to customers.
  • P&L Management & Accountability for all Discretionary Office Expenses.
  • Direct management of DOT & TSA Compliance & Safety Program ensuring full company compliance with all regulations.
  • Oversight of all Company Equipment to ensure equipment is kept in good condition and working order and that all Trucks are compliant at all times.
  • Leverage incoming Sales Leads to open new customer accounts via email, phone, or in-person communication with prospects.
  • Management of all HR Issues for all staff (including unemployment claims, etc.)
  • Oversight of any Warehousing & Storage customers.
  • Identification, Recruitment, and Set Up of additional Carriers to augment Hazel’s Agent network.
  • Identification of potential Legal/Liability issues for Senior Management.
  • Direct Oversight over Insurance Claims (bringing in Senior Management where necessary)
  • Identification of additional Asset/Capital Requirement needs for Senior Management (e.g., New Trucks, Computer Equipment, etc.)
  • Participation in Industry trade associations – including attending national events and conferences.
  • Leadership of the office role in the community via support of charitable causes relevant to the local office.
  • Writing & Delivering Performance Reviews for all Office Staff.
  • Management of office culture and morale.
  • Providing market knowledge and assistance to Senior Management in setting local & national pricing.
  • Assist Senior Management in setting Corporate Strategy and identifying new growth opportunities.

Direct Reports:

  • All Operational Staff will report to this position, including:
  • Office Lead Dispatcher
  • All Full-Time and Part-Time Dispatchers
  • All Warehouse Personnel (if applicable)
  • All Employee Drivers

Expectations for Hours and Travel

  • This is a full-time salaried position. As a Senior Manager, the GM is expected to work as many hours as it takes to get their job done. At a minimum this will be 40 hours per week – but could be significantly more hours depending on the business needs. This person will be running a business unit that operates 24/7/365 – so he/she should expect to be contacted occasionally during nights/weekends.
  • Travel will be minimal but may include travel to other company offices. GMs will also be expected to go to visit customers as needed. All Travel expenses will be paid by Hazel’s.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Summary of Experience and Education

  • College degree preferred
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous experience in the freight industry required
  • Previous Dispatch experience is a major advantage
  • Previous experience in phone-based Customer Service is required
  • Previous experience in office administration is a “plus”
  • Previous experience in running a Terminal and/or opening a new Terminal is a major advantage
