Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: With minimal supervision, performs duties as assigned by management in assisting and mentoring technicians with repairs in the field, in a safe and efficient manner. This position will also be responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive learning and development programs for technicians while working with the respective managers on the technician skills assessments. Working in conjunction with the Technical Communicator(s), this position will assist as needed to communicate with Caterpillar and relay any pertinent information as needed to customers and the dealership. This position will also assist with branch level duties as needed.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres strictly to all Hawthorne’s safety, housekeeping, credit, and other rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains a favorable business relationship with customers, suppliers, and personnel from other departments.
  • Proactively supports a positive safety culture with employees and customers.
  • Conducts technical training for technicians to enhance their skill and productivity levels.
  • Works alongside technicians when needed to mentor, coach and train technicians.
  • Provides customer training as required to include but not limited to new machine delivery, operation and maintenance, ET, SIS, PartStore and VisionLink upon request of management.
  • In collaboration with sales reps, identify revenue growth opportunities.
  • Assists TC in administering and maintaining ongoing log of product problems and actions that require resolution.
  • Assists with troubleshooting problems with Caterpillar and Allied products. Diagnoses system and component failures.
  • Supports Service Managers / operations staff by negotiating, preparing, submitting and claiming GW to Cat.
  • Provides technical communication between service operations and Cat DSN / Engineering and technical teams.
  • Makes warranty recommendations and prepares reports when performing warranty service jobs.
  • Designs curricula, class materials and facilitates classes according to the skills Inventory results.
  • Works with training personnel in developing & communicating class delivery schedules at assigned locations.
  • Attends CAT/Dealer classes to ensure proficiency with skills and to obtain/maintain required certifications (CIAP).
  • Keeps informed of new products introductions & conducts NPI courses for employees and customers as needed.
  • Attends training/ certification classes as directed and obtains passing grades in all.
  • Works with service department to improve technician productivity and efficiency. Identifies and communicates tooling and training needs.
  • Maintains branch standards for safety, housekeeping, employee attendance, productivity, and customer service.
  • Promotes teamwork and works with the team to meet branch performance results.
  • Will conduct any other duties deemed necessary by the reporting Manager.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Must have Associates Degree (AAJAS) or equivalent.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of industry or related experience.
  • Must have experience with mentoring technicians and conducting training classes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading technical data and schematic drawings.
  • Must have proven written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have proven presentation skills with ability to answer questions from management, employees, and customers.
  • Must have strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team handling multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver license with a good driving record.
  • Must understand basic and advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting of systems.
  • Must be capable of reading and troubleshooting from electrical / hydraulic/ mechanical prints and / or drawings.
  • Must be proficient in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, CAT ET and SIS, and be able to work with related computer programs associated with system controllers and devices.
  • TESTING REQUIREMENTS: Applicants may be required to pass a written and/or oral examination before being considered for employment in this position.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Willing to travel at least 40% of the time.
  • Walking: Moves about on foot often through uneven terrain, up and down stairs.
  • Hands/arms: Operates equipment to include hand and power tools.
  • Handling: Seizes objects, works with hands.
  • Lifting: Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts, tools, paperwork; up to 60 lbs.
  • Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
  • Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  • Climbing: In and out of equipment.
  • Standing: Remains in standing position, if required to perform various functions of the job.
  • Vision: Reads spec sheets, invoices, parts books & service manuals, and reports on the computer.
  • Talking: Communicates by radio, phone and in person.
  • Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication by radio, phone, and in person.
  • Sitting: Sits at desk and in vehicle for extended periods.
  • Lying: Lies in prone position under equipment.
  • PHYSICAL STRENGTH:

  • Lifting: Up to 60 lbs. daily, frequent exertion.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL:

  • Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
  • Temp/Weather: Works in both an office and outdoor environment.
  • Exposure: Foul odors, fumes, and harsh substances.
