Here at Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Elementary School , we strive for excellence and are committed to providing a quality standards-based education in a safe and nurturing environment. We are located in Kalihi-Palama, across from Tamashiro Market and Kaumakapili Church. Our students come from a wide variety of ethnicities and backgrounds. We are named after Hawaii's heir apparent, Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn. In the year of her untimely death in 1899, Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Elementary School opened its doors. A clipping of her banyan tree from her home, 'Ainahau, was given to the school. Today, our banyan tree continues to flourish on the makai side of our campus. Nestled in a serene corner of our bustling community, Ka'iulani Elementary School stands as a beacon of learning, growth, and vibrant spirit. With its welcoming facade adorned with colorful murals and lush greenery, the school exudes an inviting charm that instantly uplifts anyone who steps onto its grounds. Upon entering, one is greeted by the hum of youthful energy and the warm smiles of dedicated educators. The corridors buzz with creativity, adorned with student artwork and inspiring quotes that ignite curiosity and imagination. Every corner whispers tales of exploration and discovery, beckoning young minds to embark on a journey of knowledge and self-discovery. The heart of Ka'iulani Elementary beats within its classrooms, where learning transcends textbooks and embraces hands-on experiences. From the wonders of science experiments to the melodies of music classes, each lesson is a celebration of diversity and individuality, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among students. In the embrace of Ka'iulani Elementary School, young hearts soar, minds expand, and futures ignite with endless possibilities. It's more than just a school; it's a sanctuary of learning, a haven of dreams, and a beacon of hope for generations to come. OUR HISTORY Princess Victoria Ka'iulani was born on October 16, 1875 to Miriam Likelike and Archibald Cleghorn. She was the heir apparent to the throne of Hawai'i, successor to her aunt, Queen Lydia Liliuokalani. Princess Ka'iulani grew up at 'Ainahau, an estate given to her by her godmother, Ruth Ke'elikolani. She loved to ride her pony, Fairy. She also feed her pet peacocks under the large Indian banyan in front of her house. Ka'iulani's mother passed away when she was just 11 years old. She was sent to London to attend school two years later. While away, she heard news of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy meaning she would never be queen of Hawai'i. She traveled to Washington to plead for the return of the throne to her aunt but was unsuccessful. Our Princess died unexpectedly on March 6, 1899 at the young age of 23. It was said that her peacocks cried out with sadness the day she passed away. That same year, a new school was opened in Kalihi-Palama and was named Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Elementary School. Her father gave a clipping of the banyan tree to the school. Today that Indian banyan tree flourishes on the makai side of our school campus. Every year on or near October 16th, Ka'iulani's birthday, we celebrate and honor her in song and dance. The Royal Hawaiian Band joins us at our outdoor stage for this special event. Various artists have come to our school to depict our princess in different forms of art. We are proud of our history and thankful to be named after such a remarkable woman.
