Duties Summary

  • Supervises and participates in lifeguard duties to ensure the safety of patrons at a pool; manages an aquatic center or facility and plans, schedules, and supervises the work of lifeguards and other assigned employees;
  • plans, organizes, and conducts instructional and recreational activities; responsible for the maintenance and repair of the facilities;
  • works with community groups and the public on program activities, scheduling, and resolving concerns regarding the center;

and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Aquatics Division at Laupahoehoe Swimming Pool.

M ay be eligible to receive a $2000 Recruitment Incentive. Conditions apply.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervises and establishes work schedules for lifeguards and others assigned to pool to ensure proper coverage and the safety of the patrons.
  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates all programs and activities for the assigned facility; modifies and changes activities as appropriate;

publicizes program and activities; maintains and prepares reports of activities and statistics on pool utilization.

  • Maintains liaison with the public and community groups to survey interests and to recruit volunteers and participants for activities.
  • Works with the public, other agencies, and county personnel in addressing issues and concerns regarding the pool and the scheduling of its use.
  • Enforces ordinances, laws, and safety regulations.
  • Watches over patrons at a public swimming pool to protect life and prevent accidents; performs rescues and resuscitations when necessary.
  • Administers first aid for injuries.
  • Conducts training classes and drills in lifesaving techniques including first aid, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, and use of lifesaving equipment;

gives instructions in swimming, water safety, and in pool maintenance.

  • Assists in planning and coordinating and participates in county-wide aquatic activities.
  • Maintains, sets up, and operates various pool equipment such as ramps and lifts for persons with disabilities, diving boards, lane lines, timing / scoring systems, etc.

requests for new or replacement equipment.

  • Inspects the pool and facilities and initiates maintenance work orders or requests for safety and patron accommodation concerns.
  • Maintains and / or directs the maintenance of all equipment and supplies associated with the pool to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the public.
  • Maintains and / or oversees the maintenance of water quality to meet health standards and regulations; maintains proper storage and usage of hazardous chemicals, utilizing appropriate safety equipment as required;

keeps daily records of activities relating to the maintenance of water quality.

  • Participates in personnel related matters concerning employees assigned to the facility.
  • Operates vehicle to run errands such as make bank deposits, pick up supplies, etc.
  • May assist in pool maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience :

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to :

  • graduation from high school, and
  • two (2) years of life guarding work experience, and
  • a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate, and
  • a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED Certificate, and
  • a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training Instructor Certificate, or
  • other current equivalent certification, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.

You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire.

Examination : All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

  • Knowledge of : Techniques and methods of lifesaving and the proper use of lifesaving equipment; first aid principles and practices;
  • techniques of demonstration and instruction; principles and practices of supervision; basic methods and practices of filtering and purifying swimming pool water;

cleaning practices and equipment and supplies used in pool maintenance; report writing; and public relations.

  • Ability to : Plan, assign, direct, and review the work of others; supervise and participate in the maintenance and repair of the aquatic facility and equipment;
  • conduct water rescues; administer first aid and CPR; recognize when ill or injured persons require professional medical care;
  • plan, develop, and implement aquatic instructional and recreational activities; conduct training classes; prepare concise, complete, and accurate reports;

establish an effective working relationship with staff and members of the public of varying backgrounds and ages; and enforce regulations tactfully and effectively.
