Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is Hiring a Kahului Elementary - Grade 5 Teacher (2024-01948) Near Kahului, HI

Description

SCHOOL PROFILE

Kahului Elementary School is located in the Central Maui area with students in preschool through grade 5. Historically, the majority of Kahului School's students have come from homes in which a family member has worked for Alexander & Baldwin's HC&S sugar plantation and its various enterprises. The growth of the town of Kahului had its beginnings in the A & B's "Dream City" residential development in the 1950's.

Kahului continues to be characterized by its historical ties to the plantation's immigrant community, and the school's student ethnic demographics over the years have correlated closely with the changes in the dominant plantation workforce. In recent years, ties to the island's tourism industry have grown within the parent workforce. Student demographics have shown an increase in the number of English Language Learners(ELL), the percentage of economic disadvantaged students, and in student transiency.

Kahului School's elected School Community Council consists of six members including two parents, one community member, one teacher, one classified employee and an administrator. Two non-voting student representatives elected by students are on the SCC.
