POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing routine medical screening and care as well as routine resident care for residents at our 30-bed Residential Treatment Center. Our program houses male youth between the ages of 9 and 18 with sexual impulse disorder. Duties include providing a safe and therapeutic environment while providing care to in a manner that considers safety, residents’ rights and comfort, level of development and the therapeutic environment. Continuously observing the residents' behavior, mental status and activities, and reports this information to the appropriate clinical staff; assists with activities of daily living and encourages independent behavior. Other typical duties are assisting with admissions, discharges and transfers and participating in the implementation of the resident’s individualized plan of care. The RN oversees the dispensing of medication by the approved medication staff.
Duties will include:
  • Performs nursing screening on newly admitted residents and addresses identified nursing care needs on the individual service plan as appropriate.
  • Monitors health related issues of residents and arranges for medical evaluations when required.
  • Consults with physicians on medical issues and receives telephone orders for medications/treatment as appropriate.
  • Provides education to families and residents related to health care issues and provides medication teaching according to Michigan Mental Health Code standards.
  • Assists with procedures and physical exams; when requested, teaches infection control to residents/families and staff when issues arise.
  • Administers medication outlined in the Medication Administration Policy.
  • Assists in training RCS staff in Vital Signs assuring completion of observed hands-on technique.
  • Assists with resident trips outside the hospital transporting residents in hospital van, as needed.
  • Observes resident behavior and reports this information to the appropriate clinical staff.
  • Remains in resident areas whenever possible to assist residents and to assist in the ongoing functioning of the milieu.
  • Sets limits on residents’ behavior and intervenes to decrease the panic of disturbed residents.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing with associate degree in nursing and/or bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan required.
  • One year of experience in nursing required.
  • Experience in treating Impulse Disorder population preferred.
  • Provision of satisfactory motor vehicle operation report preferred.
  • Current certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention preferred.
  • Current certification in BLS/CPR preferred.
  • Employees must be in good standing (employment/corrective action history, evaluation, etc.) to be considered for internal transfers.
