Job Summary
Research in the Giribet Lab is driven by an interest in animal diversity and evolution. To understand how this diversity came to be, we focus on reconstructing the chronicle of animal life. With an array of data and approaches, we investigate relationships of invertebrate phyla and the timing of their diversification. This position is key to the smooth daily operations of the lab. The faculty member will heavily rely on this position to keep research projects running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. The position is a point of contact and resource to people in the lab and externally as well.
Position Description
The Researcher II advises undergraduate students in the proper lab techniques and best practices. Interprets and implements research methods for others in the lab. Recommends creative solutions to improve quality of outcomes and data. Responsible for daily maintenance and operations of the Lab. Determines what supplies to purchase for lab, replenishes consumables and glassware, and properly stores and inventories instruments and hardware. Point of contact for operational issues while PI is away from the lab. On behalf of PI, leads research projects and independently carries out laboratory experiments. Trains graduate, post-docs, researchers and others on the lab equipment. Troubleshoots equipment, performs repairs, and arranges for equipment maintenance and repair by vendors as needed. Assigns and oversees individual lab member tasks/duties and organizes lab-wide cleaning efforts. Works collaboratively with members in the lab in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques and protocols to support their research. Instructs other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques and trains personnel on specific equipment, as needed. Works directly with vendors to address lab-specific needs, obtain quotes, and solve billing issues. Organizes and summarizes data, reporting experiment results in different formats, in compliance with federal grants. Presents research at lab meetings, and at national conferences. Contributes to scientific papers. Conducts orientation for new lab members and administers lab-specific exit checklists.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, genetics/genomics or closely related field. At least 3 years’ experience in a research lab is required. Lab experience during education may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Master’s degree is preferred. Candidate must be well-trained and self-motivated with excellent organizational, management, and communication skills. The ability to work as part of a team, problem solve, and be adaptable to new situations is also crucial. Experience running and troubleshooting equipment is a plus. Great independent judgement required.
Physical Requirements
May be required to lift, move, and transport related laboratory equipment.
