Purpose: The intent of this Fellowship is to help increase the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Emergency Nurses. This program is devoted to the role of the Emergency nurse and designed to provide students with a foundational didactic and practical learning experience. The Fellowship will enhance the student's education through direct observation of patient care and exposure to Emergency nursing responsibilities. Opportunities to attend relevant internal educational programs and meetings with staff members at Hartford Hospital will provide additional learning experiences for the nursing student.
Program Scope:
The fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of practice utilizing observational and hands on learning experiences. It consists of a combination of instructor facilitated mock scenario validations and on-unit nursing practices. The programs objectives pertain to the fundamentals of Emergency nursing with the goal of setting up a foundational framework to transition the nursing student, once graduated, into an Emergency nurse. Working together with the Nurse Educators, Emergency services and Emergency nurse preceptors; the students will gain exposure to:
1. Foundations of the critical care nursing practice
2. Key elements of the professional role of the Emergency nurse
3. Assessment in the Emergency setting
4. Ethics related to nursing practice and patient care in the Emergency setting
5. Patient education
6. Quality, Safety and Risk management
7. Methods and practices to control and prevent infection in the Emergency setting.
Research Experience:
The student fellow will be guided in a basic research project related to Emergency nursing. The responsibilities of the nursing fellow in relation to the research experience include; choice in research topic, comprehensive literature review, investigative work, and poster creation. The culmination of the research experience will include a presentation of the research poster to the Fellowship group, nursing instructors, faculty and nursing team.
Program Schedule:
The program will span eight (8) weeks in length, beginning June 3, 2024 and will be conducted at Hartford Hospital. Following successful completion of the program, candidates will be offered per diem, Student Nurse Tech assignments.
In addition to being one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Connecticut, HHED is also an accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, chest pain center and comprehensive stroke center, treating patients of the highest acuity in the region. Comprised of 109 beds, with the addition of a new 19 bed ED Observation Unit, HHED treats an average of 109,000 patients annually.
