PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Assists the classroom teacher in delivering intervention and instruction to students with special needs by providing instructional, behavioral and personal care support. Performs related tasks as required and directed. Performs all work under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Have completed 2 years of college (associates and/or bachelor degree preferred).
  2. Have demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and citizens.
  3. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  4. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. 
  5. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists the students with the requirements of the early childhood special education classroom and the goals defined in student I.E.P. (Individualized Educational Plan)
  2. Informs the classroom teacher of any special information or problems about students that relates to their academic/social success. (Behavior checklist may be a part of documentation.)
  3. Assists the teacher in the preparation of classroom materials that relate to the needs of the class.
  4. Provides one-on-one academic tutoring/socially appropriate modeling with students as necessary.
  5. Keeps the teacher continually informed on student academic and behavioral progress.
  6. Assumes supervision duties as assigned. Work with small groups of students as directed.
  7. Prepares daily attendance/lunch counts and take to proper location.
  8. Takes students to/from classroom for any necessary medications.
  9. Assists with specific medical/physical issues as directed by the classroom teacher.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal and/or the classroom teacher.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Occasional travel with students on field trips as necessary. Attendance at evening and weekend student or staff activities, Parent Teacher Organization meetings, and other functions, as required. Regular contact with staff members and parents/guardians is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
