POSITION SUMMARY: The Special Education Coordinator provides leadership in developing and supporting the division’s special education programming and services primarily at the secondary level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides special education assistance regarding programming/regulations to teachers, administrators and staff in buildings assigned.
  2. Has significant knowledge of special education law including IDEA, Virginia Regulations and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  3. Reviews IEPs for legal compliance, appropriate educational programming and oversees the implementation of those IEPs for all students in buildings assigned
  4. Has significant knowledge in all aspects of secondary education with a comprehensive understanding of paths to graduation, transition and transition planning. 
  5. Provides assistance to multidisciplinary teams which determine special education eligibility and educational programming for students with disabilities. 
  6. Coordinates activities related to the participation of children with disabilities in the various assessment programs including VAAP/ VESOL. 
  7. Provides in service training and ongoing coaching to empower staff and build teacher capacity in the area of special education including transition topics, transition plans within IEPs, and new changes that occur because of changes in the Virginia Regulations and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  8. Serves as a resource to IEP teams, teachers, administrators, families, and students in accessing transition services in addition to providing information on transition topics.
  9. Coordinates special transportation requests between the schools and transportation. 
  10. Supports the development and maintenance of a virtual Parent Resource Center 
  11. Coordinates parentally placed service plans (private school and homeschool) and the Jail education program. 
  12. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  14. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  15. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  16. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  17. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  18. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. At least 5 years of experience as a special education teacher with experience teaching students with disabilities in a public school setting- experience teaching at the secondary level is strongly preferred. 
  2. Special Education Teaching License-(Postgraduate Professional)
  3. An endorsement in Administration and Supervision is preferred
  4. Related degrees/endorsements will be considered
  5. Experience coaching and developing school staff in all areas of special education. 
  6. In good standing from previous position or division
  7. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  8. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  9. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  10. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  12. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  13. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  14. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
