Harriet Tubman Village Charter School is Hiring an Instructional Aide Near San Diego, CA

POSITION: Classroom Aide

Under the direction or general supervision of the Classroom Teacher, performs a variety of instructional support duties and activities to assist certificated teachers in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students; responds to the personal care needs of students; and performs a variety of clerical and instructional support activities to enhance the educational environment in support of instructional personnel.

Essential Functions:

Essential Functions/ Duties/Responsibilities:

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

· Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.

· Tutors individual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow-up learning and training activities.

· Monitors and assists students with special learning needs in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.

· Monitors and assists in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions.

· Confers with teachers and specialists to develop and evaluate individual and group educational goals and objectives; assists school site(s) with the implementation of special education programs as assigned; assists instructors with individual education plan and report preparation schedules.

· Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.

· Prepares and assists in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instructional level of students in the class or program; collaborates with classroom teacher, or special education teacher to design and implement curriculum modifications and accommodations as necessary.

· Directs students in safe learning and recreational activities.

· Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.

· Escorts assigned student(s) to and from events, classes, lunch, and other activities; maintains supervision as assigned.

· Provides teachers and/or school administrators with relevant feedback and information on student progress through observation, daily contact, and maintaining accurate student records; may participate in meetings to share information about students and/or the special education program.

· Maintains a variety of records and files including confidential student records and information.

· Maintains or assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment.

· Uses good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students.

· Operates and assists students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media and computer assisted instructional equipment.

· May perform routine clerical tasks such as typing, computer operation, filing and photocopying.

· Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of and Ability to:

· Basic concepts of child growth and development.

· Developmental behavior characteristics.

· General needs and behaviors of students; special needs of students who have behavioral, or learning disabilities.

· Basic behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils.

· Basic and specialized instructional techniques for working with students.

· Basic reading, writing, math, and communication skills in order to assist students with academics.

· Basic assessment skills.

· Communication skills to interact in both formal and informal settings.

· Safe practices in classroom activities.

· Basic office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.

Ability to:

· Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, including those exhibiting specialized needs.

· Understand organization and school site operations and objectives.

· Learn methods and procedures to be followed in assigned instructional situation.

· Understand the needs of assigned students and effectively relate to these needs in a learning situation.

· Effectively supervise students in a variety of situations.

· Appropriately manage student behavior and guide students toward more acceptable social behaviors.

· Operate a variety of educational and office related machines, equipment, computers, and supporting software applications.

· Maintain composure under stressful situations.

· Perform effectively and assertively in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment.

· Interact with teacher and administrators, parents, and specialists in order to carryout assigned duties.

· Produce routine written program reports and correspondence.

· Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

· Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would qualify for this position. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Prefer incumbents to have met the charter school para-educator criteria, which is either two years (48 units) of study at an institution of higher education, an associate’s degree or higher, OR passing a qualifying assessment test including but not limited to the CBEST exam.

Experience:

Some experience in dealing with school age children with various special needs.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a classroom setting.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Valid California Driver’s License

First-Aid Certificate Desired

DOJ fingerprint Clearance

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

➢ Part Time: 180 days while students are in attendance. Up to 35 hours/week
