Job Description: Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Summary of Position:

Under direction of Special Education Coordinator provides psychological assessment, diagnosis and individual, group, and family therapy, referral, and follow-up to acute, chronic, or moderately disturbed mentally ill students, and consultation with outside facilities and/or agencies as necessary.

Credentials and/or Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. 

  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the student and family. 

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant current special education methodologies and techniques. 

  • Interviewing and psychological/developmental assessment skills. 

  • Ability to assess mental status in students and to develop individual treatment goals and plans. 

  • Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records. 

  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards. 

  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. 

  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses. 

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques. 

  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Diagnoses or assesses mental and emotional disorders of individuals and administers programs of treatment; interviews students (and their families) in school and studies medical and social case histories. 

  2. Participates in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings to discuss assessment findings with special education team, parent and child advocate. Assists in generation of terms and conditions of IEP for student. Individual Education Plan (IEP) Development will be done upon completion of aforementioned assessments. The IEP will be written in compliance with Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). 

  3. Treats psychological disorders to effect improved adjustments utilizing various psychological techniques; selects appropriate treatment approach and plans frequency, intensity, and duration of individual, group, and family therapies. 

  4. Assesses patient progress and modifies treatment programs accordingly; communicates with and counsels family members as appropriate. 

  5. Documents therapy in accordance with policies and procedures regarding student academic and medical records; implements and adheres to policies which ensure patient confidentiality. 

  6. Provides crisis intervention in situations requiring immediate psychological treatment. 

  7. Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings, clinician meetings, and workshops to enhance professional development and maintain currency of methodology and techniques. 

  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Training

  • Masters degree in Social Work from an accredited university.

  • 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

  • Appropriate certification and licensure in Clinical Social Work from the District of Columbia.
