Description

General Function: It is the responsibility of each employee of the Company to understand and promote the Company Mission Statement and Statement of Values while adhering to the Company Code of Conduct. The primary responsibility of this position is managing the material procurement function across the Company in a manner that attains the lowest total procurement cost for specified buying categories.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Purchasing Program.
   1. Follow procedures and systems of the purchasing department that will achieve the Company’s goals and objectives.
   2. Negotiating with vendors for the best pricing, terms and service levels available within the industry at all times for specified buying categories.
2. Costing and Pricing.
   1. Working with the AP Department and Marketing Department to ensure that the Company is taking full advantage of all discounts and marketing dollars offered by vendors for specified buying categories.
   2. Working with the AP Department and the locations to resolve invoicing and delivery discrepancies.
   3. Maintaining margin and pricing levels in the computer.
   4. Maintaining Company wide costing for specified buying categories.
   5. Working with Managers to maintain variable pricing levels in the system.
3. Inventory Management.
   1. Monitoring material storage at all Company locations to ensure that product is not being damaged and that FIFO practices are being followed.
   2. Look for opportunities to bulk purchase and capture extra profits for the Company for specified buying categories.
   3. Evaluating new vendors for existing products to determine if quality, price, and service levels could be improved for specified buying categories.
   4. Minimizing damaged and obsolete inventory.
4. Customer Service.
   1. Attending trade shows and industry association shows to keep abreast of new products and new uses for current products.
5. Quality – Resolving major quality issues with vendors.
6. Budgeting and Accounting.
   1. Serving as a resource to the General Managers on material pricing issues.
7. General – As Harbin Lumber Company, Inc. is a group of locations each working individually and as a team, Buyers must be a team player and must develop positive working relationships with all managers.

Physical Requirements: Light to moderate lifting may be required.

Working Conditions: The office is located in a good environment. Buyers must allocate time to visit with the locations on a scheduled basis and with customers as needed. They must also travel to national and regional buying shows occasionally.

Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of three years purchasing experience in a building materials related field preferred.

Education: A four year degree in management, business, finance or other related field is preferred.
