HAPCO is Hiring a Safety Assistant Near Abingdon, VA

The Safety Assistant position will assist in creating and executing safety protocols. An example of typical duties includes examining work areas, locating hazardous elements as-well-as duties including documentation such as spreadsheets. Also, they maintain first aid centers, assist in collecting, preparing, and producing documentation of related safety reports, etc.

The Safety Assistant position will work on safety projects and matters in a support role and will report directly to the Director-Human Resources & Safety. This position has a dotted line to the Safety Coordinator. He/she will work both independently and together with others to create a safe workplace environment by assisting with field observation, inspections, etc. on executing work safely. This individual will uphold the standards and expectations set by the Company and is responsible for contributing to the overall success of the safety functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are coordinated in partnership with the Safety Department and all employees to ensure all aspects of employee safety are being met.

  • This position will assist in:

o The implementation of best practices and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives to safe work practices.

o Employee training in areas such as yearly compliance, hazardous condition identification, use of safety equipment, mobile equipment, first responders, etc.

o Promoting awareness of safety practices.

o Safety audits and inspection of facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety compliance.

o The investigation of industrial accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine root causes, install preventive measures, and return-to-work activities.

o The inspection, maintenance, and issuance of safety equipment.

  • Maintain recordkeeping for injury/illness cases in accordance with OSHA requirements.
  • Write and maintain reports of incidents.
  • This position requires the employee to be trained as a First Responder.
  • Investigate and address employee safety concerns including follow up on all identified hazards.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations.
  • Find solutions that serve to combat and control workplace hazards.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Understanding and experience with safety processes and procedures preferred.
  • Work effectively with others in a team-based environment to accomplish company goals and to identify and resolve problems.
  • Good attendance is mandatory.
  • Carry out departmental goals consistent with corporate strategic goals.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Comply with all company rules, safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to continually prioritize tasks and deal with shifting priorities to be completed as requires.
  • Self-starter and multi-task oriented. Able to work independently, as-well-as with others, as needed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma is required. An Associate’s Degree or certificate from a Community College or Vocational School is preferred.
