Next Gen Program:

The Hanwha Aerospace USA Next Gen Training Program is deployed to sustain Hanwha’s future through education, on the job training, and co-op opportunities. The intent of the program is to prepare Connecticut’s next manufacturing work force for modern technology and its application to the aero engine industry.

As part of the program students will be receiving on the job exposure to Hanwha manufacturing through our shadow program. This provides students the opportunity to learn about the multiple disciplines of Hanwha. The students will spend several days in each of the below, learning from our highly skilled workforce.

  1. Apex Tool Room and CNC Machines: Students will spend several days being mentored by graduate apprentices in toolmaking and machining, learning the fundamentals and application of blueprint reading, manual and CNC milling and turning. The Apex division is a make from print manufacturer providing durable tools (fixtures, gages, dies, etc.) to OEM’s and other Hanwha divisions.
  1. Quality Assurance: Students will spend several days learning the importance of quality control while working with our inspection teams. They will be learning the application of measuring tools and advanced inspection techniques. There will be exposure to CMM’s (Coordinate Measuring Machines) and aerospace and industrial quality requirements, as they work with our inspection team on world class products.
  1. Large Machining: Students will spend several days working with our machinists operating our largest machine tools. Their experience will include exposure to CNC vertical turning and CNC Mill Turn machine tools. They will shadow our operators as they set-up, machine, and measure on Hanwha’s largest equipment.
  1. Assembly and De-Burring: Students will shadow the assembly of complex cases experiencing the basics of fastening through riveting, bolting and other assembly techniques. Additionally, participants will shadow the art of de-burring as Hanwha employees hand finish products through abrasive application.
  1. Cellular Manufacturing: Students will shadow our most modern manufacturing cells. They will spend time in our HPC hub cell where Hanwha manufactures some the most highly stressed components of today’s aero engines. They will experience CNC 4 axis turning and 5 axis milling while learning the fundamentals of cellular manufacturing.
  1. Flexible Manufacturing System: Students will shadow the operation of Hanwha’s FMS where our complex casings of next generation engine programs are made. This system consists of eight 1250mm full 5 axis Mill Turn CNC machines, joined by robotic pallet changer delivering products to the machine tools. The FMS machine tools are intelligent machines, creating their own work and tool offsets while manufacturing and inspecting the products prior to their exit from the machines. It is part of a lean pull cell using advanced cellular processes.
  1. Special Process: Students will shadow Hanwha employees as they deploy unique processes as part of our quality assurance. These consist of FPI (fluorescent penetrant inspection), ultra-sonic and super cleaning.

All students will have the opportunity to work with our existing highly trained work force as Hanwha makes some of the most complex products in the aero-engine industry for major OEM’s like Pratt and Whitney, Safran, and General Electric.
