Hamtramck Public Schools is Hiring a School Nurse RN Near Hamtramck, MI

JOB SUMMARY: Hamtramck Public Schools seeks a school nurse to advise on student health plans. Hamtramck Schools recognizes the importance of “schools, working together with local health departments, have an important role in slowing the spread of diseases and protecting vulnerable students and staff, to help ensure students have safe and healthy learning environments". Under general supervision school nurses will provide communication, training, consultation and recommendations to the school district as guided and directed by the Wayne County Health Department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor or Master’s (preferred) Degree in Nursing
  • Certification in CPR/AED/First-Aid must be maintained.
  • Be licensed by the Michigan Board of Nursing to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Michigan.

NOTE: Applicants who are eligible to be licensed by the State of Michigan and who meet the other requirements will not be eligible for appointment until they have been licensed by or possess a valid permit from the Michigan Board of Nursing.

  • Volunteer experience may be accepted provided it is equivalent in level and scope to the required experience.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • A passionate commitment to improving the health, safety and well-being of all students, staff, and community members.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but not be limited to):

  • Works with students from age 3-22 years old.
  • Consults with health and human service agencies and health care providers.
  • Communicates with parents, health care providers, interdisciplinary team members and involved agency staff in the management of a student’s health care and social needs.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date student health records as mandated by law, codes, procedures and policies.
  • Is a member of the interdisciplinary IEP team; performs student health assessments, parent or guardian interviews, team consultation, plan development and report-writing.
  • Providing consultation, leadership, professional development opportunities for quality school nursing and public health services to the school district for prevention of communicable diseases.
  • Serves as a team member providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals due to communicable diseases.
  • Works within the context (characteristics, needs, and circumstances) to determine a set of health strategies appropriate for the district.
  • Monitors, interprets, synthesizes, and disseminates relevant research findings and other information related to communicable disease health, school nursing practice, current legal issues, and new legislation that impacts school health programs and services.
  • Interprets, reviews and disseminates model policies, standards, and best practices to promote safe, legal, and effective communicable disease prevention strategies.
  • Plans and uses professional judgment, and acts effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by Wayne County Health Department.
  • Serves as the health care representative providing guidance and training to the school district on appropriate COVID-19 prevention strategies including communicable disease health screening programs, infectious disease reporting, and contact tracing; and identification of students' chronic health care needs and how they may be impacted by communicable diseases.
  • Trains students about communicable diseases and best practices for prevention and conduct handwashing classes.
  • Provide medical care and services to students according to physician prescribed medical care and treatment orders. With parental consent, provide emergency treatment and routine first aid in case of illness or injury.
  • Federal and state laws, codes, regulations and requirements pertaining to areas of assigned responsibility for regular and special education.
  • Acts as case manager working with families for students who have chronic health condition(s) and/or social needs including, but not limited to students with emotional disabilities, technology dependent, orthopedic impairments and speech and language impairments.
  • Provide medical first aid and emergency support to faculty and staff, as needed and appropriate.
  • Follow confidentiality and privacy rules and regulations in all matters.
  • Confer with students, parents, and teachers regarding student health.
  • Assist in the management of the school’s health system database, updating clinic treatment notes daily and ensuring parents review/update student health information.
  • Coordinate with local health agencies and medical treatment facilities as necessary.
  • Respond to emergency medical situations; perform first aid as needed; coordinate with local emergency personnel and agencies as required.
  • Assist with the coordination of professional development for faculty and staff.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and materials needed in the clinic; develop and monitor procedures for maintaining adequate supplies in all school first aid kits. Assist in the creation of communication to school community concerning health and welfare issues.
  • Creates a welcoming and positive teaching and learning climate and culture.

Communicable Disease Specific Responsibilities:

  • Stay current on the emerging communicable disease guidance to appropriately answer questions; stay current on cases in the area.
  • Outreach to students at-risk (for communicable diseases) for social issues related to social distancing and offer guidance and information.
  • In coordination with school administration, district administration and Student Services department, keep parents, family and staff informed by proactively communicating updates on the illness and how to address related stress and anxiety.
  • Assist the Director of Human Resources with best practices and protocols surrounding communicable diseases.
  • Executes other duties as assigned by superintendent

SALARY: Per the HFT Teacher Contract
