Hampton Roads Community Action Program is Hiring a Bus Driver Near Portsmouth, VA

POSITION PURPOSE: Serve as a member of the Transportation Team to provide safe, quality transportation services to children and families in the Head Start/Early Head Start Program.

SUPERVISOR: Transportation Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have the knowledge, skills and experience needed to perform the assigned functions responsibly.

Must have high school diploma or GED.

Must possess a valid VA Driver’s License.

Must have a Commercial Driver’s License-Air Brakes Endorsement.

Must have a physical, TB test, and criminal record check at the time of employment.

Knowledge of geographic area

Must have a good driving record.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Adheres to all local and federal policies regarding transportation.
  • Supervises Bus Monitor.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning children and families.
  • Transports children to and from the Head Start centers conducting safe, efficient, and punctual pick-ups and deliveries including children with disabilities.
  • Transports children to and from field trips, health clinics, public schools, and other program related activities assigned.
  • Transport parents and staff to meetings, conferences, and workshops, as directed by Supervisor.
  • Drivers must encourage monitors to engage students in the Ride to Read Activity to and from Head Start daily.
  • Maintains a healthy, safe and orderly environment on the bus
  • Maintains radio communication throughout work day and after runs in case of emergencies or other pick-ups/drop offs.
  • Provides transportation for children in Newport News/Hampton Public Schools program also for children with disabilities.
  • Ensuring children are seated and remain seated using their seatbelts / harness/ rear facing seats while being transported daily.
  • Children over 1 year of age, 22-65 lbs and under 40 inches tall (Integrated Child Restraint). Minimum Passenger weighs 50 lbs.
  • Conducts a child head count; to confirm that the correct number of children is on the vehicle and has departed the bus for the day.
  • Performs daily pre-trip inspection that is required by law and daily post trip inspection during the day.
  • Check the bus for problems, tires, leaks, etc. Reports vehicle malfunctions immediately.
  • Consultation with Transportation Coordinator and Operations Manager to secure necessary repairs.
  • The end of each bus run, check the vehicle to insure that all of the children have exited the vehicle.
  • Maintain updated pick-up/drop-off schedules at all times during transporting.
  • Must submit weekly/monthly reports in a timely manner to the Operations Manager.
  • Attends bi-weekly meetings, in-service trainings when directed.
  • Referrals/Special Arrangements must be turned in to Transportation Coordinator and must be approved prior to a change being implemented.
  • All staff must sign in at the Head Start center assigned and radio Communications Manager each morning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Start/Early Head Start Director
