Habitat For Humanity is Hiring a Construction Site Supervisor Near Chicago, IL

Posting Description

The Construction Site Supervisor supports Habitat Chicago's mission by executing construction projects, operating safe and productive build sites, managing build site personnel (including Crew Leaders, volunteers, and prospective homebuyers), and engaging with stakeholders around Habitat Chicago's mission. More specifically, the Construction Site Supervisor manages the daily operations and activity on the build site, monitoring and maintaining the three-week lookahead and volunteer forecasts to create weekly and daily work plans, solving problems, completing requests and handling materials, and ensuring all volunteers and homebuyers have a meaningful experience and are satisfied with their involvement. The Construction Site Supervisor has the experience and technical knowledge to construct an entire house and can execute homebuilding plans on schedule.

Key Responsibility: Project planning (10%)

* The Site Supervisor ensures adequate capacity - labor and materials - for successful performance of the daily activity on the build site. In this responsibility area, the Site Supervisor is expected to:

* Review scope and proposed schedule of specific projects for feasibility and adequate resourcing, planning means and methods and construction milestone timelines.

* Prepare for regulatory, funding, and code compliance in active construction plans.

* Develop 3-week look-aheads and corresponding weekly and daily work plans (for staff and volunteers), incorporating both training and production.

* Coordinate with Project Manager to establish schedule of self-performed and subcontracted work.

* Together with Project Manager, create specific Salesforce projects for each build for progress measurement and reporting.

* Together with Project Manager, establish site laydown and material handlings plans to ensure safe use and storage of materials and equipment.

Key Responsibility: Project Execution (70%)

* The Site Supervisor uses craft skills and industry standard means and methods to construct Habitat Chicago projects in accordance with the annual capital plan and as directed by the Project Manager. In this responsibility area, the Site Supervisor is expected to:

* Manage all activity on the build site, adhering to the project plan and schedule, specializing in quality and safety management, serving as a resource to other personnel on trade-related issues.

* Work with Project Manager and Procurement and Warehouse Specialist to ensure build site has tools and materials needed for production, inspecting deliveries and overseeing proper use and storage.

* Measure progress and update project management information system, providing reports and updates to all relevant parties.

* Establish a safe work environment by identifying and addressing potential hazards and by providing appropriate equipment in the performance of daily tasks; monitor and report on site safety performance by internal staff and external subcontractors and volunteers.

* Enforce a high standard of quality across all construction - self-performed work, subcontractor work, and volunteer work, conducting inspections at each milestone before proceeding to the next stage of activity.

* Coordinate with Project Manager to close out active construction and prepare for home sale.

Key Responsibility: Personnel management/training (10%)

* The Site Supervisor is the most senior level position on the build site, providing structure and training for the on-site team. In this responsibility area, the Site Supervisor is expected to:

* Mobilize and manage the on-site team toward successful completion of the annual capital plan.

* Establish a site culture and environment where New Home Construction staff and service members are empowered to and capable of leading and motivating volunteers in the successful production of assigned projects.

* Meet regularly with on-site team to identify strengths/weaknesses/goals and provide ongoing support in professional development.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Expertise in homebuilding means and methods.

* Ability to read and interpret construction documents.

* Familiarity with local building codes.

* Experience calculating material quantities for procurement and handling across varied designs.

* Experience implementing industry-standard construction safety management practices.

* Experience implementing industry-standard construction quality management practices.

* Effective communication and interpersonal skills including experience training others.

* Ability to work well under pressure and with changing priorities.

* Interpersonal and cultural competency skills facilitating collaboration with a wide spectrum of people.

* Positive, optimistic outlook fostering "can-do" attitudes.

* Patience, understanding, flexibility, and ability to develop positive relationships.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Previous individual or small-team leadership responsibility

* Familiarity with City of Chicago and State of IL requirements (e.g. prevailing wage, environmental reviews, permitting, inspections, etc.)

* Ability to manage and utilize volunteers effectively.

* Understanding of challenges facing populations with low incomes.

* Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity mission and operations.

Education and Experience

* At least three years of work experience in construction or a related industry.

* Formal training or certification in construction trades, safety management, quality management, or project or construction management related to the responsibilities above.

Position Details

* Reports To: Project Manager: Housing Development

* Supervises: Assigned Crew Leaders

* Hours: Full-time. Typical work hours are 7 am-3 pm, Tuesday-Saturday. Some evening work is required, depending on program and event needs, and adjusting schedules as needed to balance hours is encouraged.

* Conditions: Must be able to lift 50 pounds, walk on uneven ground, climb to and stand at heights, stand for long periods of time, work at a computer for long periods of time and drive all construction vehicles and trailers.

* Compensation: Salaried; $52,000-$55,000, depending on experience. 30 vacation/sick/personal days per year. 90% employer paid health insurance; access to dental, vision and 401k plans.

* FLSA Status: This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is not eligible for overtime pay according to Habitat Chicago policy.
