Haag Engineering is Hiring a Construction/ Building Consultant Near New York, NY

Construction Consultant

Haag Global, a leader in Forensic Engineering and Construction Consulting since 1924, is seeking an experienced Forensic Construction Consultant (a.k.a. Building Consultant) who can reasonably drive to sites in New York City Metro, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania. Haag consultants and engineers assist insurance carriers by evaluating commercial and residential property damage following a loss. We also provide litigation support to law firms representing both plaintiffs and defendants to address cases involving disputed insurance claims, construction defects, contract disputes, delay claims, deficient job site safety, and liability. Haag does not adjust insurance claims and are seeking candidates who have firsthand commercial and residential general construction project management and estimating experience, as well as experience estimating property damage per insurance industry standards in Xactimate and Symbility. Commercial and residential construction experience in the stated geographic region is a requirement for this role.

Our consultant will conduct field inspections, determine the extent of damage, and provide cost estimates for appropriate restoration repairs or reconstruction. This work can also be performed as a review and critique of similar work done previously by others. Site inspections will assess, and require knowledge of, foundations, structural elements, roofs, facades, interior finishes, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure affected by fire, water, flood, wind, hail, weight of snow and ice, earth movement, earthquake, construction defects, material manufacturing defects, and building impacts. Some investigations will be multi-faceted and require a team of investigational professionals that may include industrial hygienists, cause and origin experts, engineers, architects, meteorologists, materials scientists, technologists, and lab or field testing. Haag offers very competitive salaries, performance incentives, extensive training, and outstanding benefits. As an employee-owned company that has grown organically, we center our culture on the growth and development of our people. Employees in every position at Haag Global are supported by their colleagues in all departments with their deep wealth of knowledge in Engineering, Construction, Meteorology, Laboratory Materials Testing, Education, and Technical Services.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

  • A HS Diploma or GED is required. An A.S., B.A. or B.S. degree in a related field is preferred, but experience and education will be considered equally important.
  • Candidates must have a strong understanding of the role they will play as a construction/building consultant to provide insurance adjusters with accurate scopes of work and estimates.
  • The ideal candidate will bring 5-10 years of expertise inspecting, estimating, and reporting on mid to large property losses and pre-existing building conditions in residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional settings caused by environmental conditions, construction defects, material/structural defects, and ground movements.
  • Insurance industry certifications issued by IAUA, IICRC, RRO, Xactimate, and licenses such as State General Contractor, are preferred.
  • Technical proficiency with Xactimate and MS Excel is required, and proficiency with RS Means, and Symbility are high priorities.
  • Must be able to work independently and with a cross-functional team of experts.
  • Strong writing skills are required. We will ask to see a redacted work sample.
  • The ability to effectively use photography to capture overviews and details of damaged and undamaged building elements to document conditions to tell a story and illustrate reports is required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are necessary; you should be an effective communicator and highly effective in face-to-face interactions, both amicable and adversarial.
  • A background in providing litigation support (deposition or trial) is preferred.
  • Heavy travel (primarily local and regional) by vehicle or by plane will be required. Some extended travel may be necessary.
  • You must have the ability to work in the field in all weather conditions, often under extreme conditions, including in the presence of mold, combustion byproducts, standing water, debris fields, and bacterial contamination. Personal Protective Equipment will be required at times and supplied by Haag.
  • Must be willing and able to perform the physical requirements of the job, including working in tight spaces, on roofs, in dark, wet, or dusty conditions. Carrying and climbing ladders and operating other pieces of field equipment are essential functions of the job.
  • Experience or willingness to train in setting up, calibrating, and operating various measurement and data collection instruments (Matterport, Leica360) is essential.
  • The ability to provide the utmost in customer service to our clients is expected of all Haag professionals.
  • You must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship or any legal restrictions.
