The Director of Industry and Trades Training reports directly to the Vice President of Workforce and Continuing Education and is responsible for providing training through occupational extension and customized training programs within Guilford County for existing and prospective businesses to maintain, enhance, and improve their business success. These programs are designed for the specific purposes of training individuals for employment, upgrading the skills of individuals presently employed, and retraining others for employment in different occupational fields. This position is responsible for Workforce and Continuing Education occupational extension and customized training programs for industrial and trades companies to include the assessment of employer needs for skill building, supervision, and leadership training. This person supervises the department coordinator, full and part-time faculty and administrative support staff, and oversees departmental budgets. This position also performs other institutional assignments as required and represents the institution within the business, workforce development, and economic development communities.
Mid Salary $84,988.55 - We offer a competitive salary package that will be determined based on the candidate's experience level and qualifications related to the job. Compensation will be commensurate with your level of experience. Duties/Functions
  • Plan and implement courses and occupational training for business and industry in service area; plan and implement effective marketing strategies for recruiting students/clients, including the use of flyers, brochures, newspaper advertisements, public appearances, radio and television appearances, news releases, and public service announcements; regularly evaluate programs, processes, and projects.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of classes determined by cost/benefit analysis and ongoing need for business and industry sectors in Guilford County.
  • Responsible for Occupational Training staff with promotion and program development; determine instructional needs, oversee recruiting and training of instructors and other personnel, and maintain proper records; promote and coordinate activities of Occupational Training programs and marketing;
  • Maintain accurate records on past, present, and future programs to establish ongoing relevance and continuance of courses, training, or credential.
  • Ensure that all departmental reports are accurate and submitted on time, i.e., payroll, travel, etc.; ensure that system office reports are completed and submitted on time; prepare other reports as assigned.
  • Develop and is accountable for instructional/administrative budgets, i.e., salaries, travel, supplies, equipment, duplication, etc.; oversee all division categorical budgets and special funds budgets; ensure that program managers are managing their budgets; maintain balanced budget and accurate records of budgeted funds for all departments; ensure that money is expended in accordance with accepted state and college policies; maintain fiscal controls by verifying payroll, requisitions, travel reimbursements and other forms required for submission; do cost benefit analysis and other measures of accountabilities; follow audit criteria and adhere to established guidelines; prepare yearly budget projections and succeeding year base budget; assist in seeking opportunities for grant funding and joint partnerships with other organizations; review and approve all contracts with instructors to ensure that they follow college guidelines; audit appropriate percent of programs as described in Management Manual.
  • Consult with business representatives, economic developers, workforce development groups, and community leaders to determine business/industry, and community training needs to help with skills enhancement and economic improvement;
  • Provide supervision for Customized Training/Occupational Extension training staff, including adjunct instructors; manage budgeted funds; manage corporate contracts and professional service agreements; call on corporate clients to develop details of client specific training; supervise and implement training opportunities as project manager; supervise and assist adjunct instructors as needed with training content and instructional design.
  • Oversees the selection and hire/rehire p/t adjunct instructors contract subject matter experts who will provide training for business sector and occupational extension courses. Manage schedules against ACA and college requirements. Interview and select appropriate 3rd party training providers and process through required purchasing/finance procedures for approval. Provide course evaluation feedback to instructor as available. Ensure that FTEs are generated with appropriate budgeted funds; Assist adjunct instructors with content and delivery prep as needed.
  • Coordinate appropriate training when needed; convey information on policies and procedures; conduct performance evaluations of direct reports; direct/supervise the activities of department coordinators, full and part-time instructors, as appropriate; full and part-time administrative assistants, as appropriate; assure that full-time instructors generate satisfactory levels of FTE and contact hours.
  • Promote and represent GTCC on a broad scale by attending local events, college events, chamber meetings, local board meetings, etc.
  • Monitor industry statistics, collect data, scan trade journals, and follow trends in regional economic clusters. Develop new training (open-enrollment courses) for the benefit of industries in the service area; supervise required class setup for Industry Training projects.
  • Consult with business representatives, economic developers, workforce development groups, and community leaders to determine business/industry, and community training needs to help with skills enhancement and economic improvement;
  • Assist in developing internal control systems to facilitate analysis, delivery, evaluation of training, and overall marketing of programs and services to area business and industries, and citizens.
  • Develop a positive working relationship amongst GTCC staff, business/industrial clients, workforce development boards and local and state economic development organizations.
  • Other Duties: consult with area business/industrial management to determine needs, provide proposals, and evaluate programs; provide training to faculty, staff, area businesses and industries, and other community colleges as required;

Education Required
Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited college in a field including, but not limited to Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, Organizational Development, Public Administration, Human Resources or other related fields.
Education Preferred
Master’s degree preferred from a regionally accredited college.
Experience Required
  • Demonstrated success in project management required. An understanding of regional and industry needs as well as national and international needs for job skills training. Ability to collaborate with Work Force Development Board, Economic Development Councils, Chambers of Commerce and other support agencies to provide business and industry training.

  • A proven track record in client-centered, business-to-business relationship building.

  • Experience with the NCCCS Customized Training Program.
KSA Required
  • Must possess highly developed analytical skills, writing and presentational skills, business analytics, and ability to communicate with business/industry and community partners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of operational disciplines including quality, planning, scheduling, strategic planning, project management, information management systems, budgeting, and accounting.
  • Ability to work as a vital part of a team, while being self-directed on projects and sales.
  • Must have experience with budgeting.
  • Must have general knowledge of marketing principles.
KSA Preferred
  • Strong knowledge of industrial technology and training; up to date knowledge on best practices in the classroom; excellent technical skills, including use of office and web-based software; conversant in core industrial concepts such as operations management, planning and scheduling, quality, warehousing, distribution, continuous improvement, lean, and safety; and willingness to achieve related certifications as deemed necessary.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • A successful track record in facilitation, employee training, and program development.
  • Evidence of sales skills to understand client needs, develop proposed solutions and ‘close the deal’.
  • Strong organization skills to manage the priorities and communications of multiple college resources, clients, and projects.
Department/Job Specific Requirements
  • Frequent travel to client locations and other GTCC campuses for training and communication; some hours during the night and weekend may be required; occasional trips out of town and perhaps out of state may be required.
