Speech and Language Pathologist

The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students ranging from PreK-12 and is a free, open enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Summary:

The Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for assessing and treating students with speech and language disorders. The Speech and Language Pathologist provides training and consultation for teachers as well as maintains all required records.

Reports to: Building Principal and SPED Director

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assessment and Treatment:

  • Evaluates students for speech language and social communication disorders.
  • Conducts formal assessments for the special education process.
  • Carries out multiple comprehensive language assessments.
  • Conducts Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation for speech.
  • Provides direct services in efforts to remediate errors in speech.
  • Ensures that student individual education programs are implemented.

Therapy:

  • Works with students to provide therapy to remediate sounds and stuttering.
  • Provides instruction in using words, developing words and communicating with others in an individual and group setting.

Consultation:

  • Provides consultation to regular education teachers and delivers in classroom strategies.
  • Organizes early intervention methods and consults with staff for early intervention.
  • Provides subject matter on what is development appropriate for speech.

Training:

  • Provides training for staff for disorders and how to identify them.
  • Designs individual education programs.
  • Identify what is development appropriate speech and provide training to staff.
  • Coordinates curriculum for IDEA and the Missouri state plan for education.

Hearing Assessments:

  • Conducts hearing screening assessments.
  • Provides pass/fail results to managers.

Services Records:

  • Maintains records of services provided for auditing purposes.
  • Reports services provided to Medicaid on a monthly basis.
  • Utilizes a therapy log and progress reports to maintain records and conformation of therapy provided to be submitted at the end of the year.

Annual Training:

  • Participates in annual training related to Medicaid billing and SDAC school district administrative training.
  • Partakes in administrative claiming Medicaid reimbursement programs for school districts.

Random Selections:

  • Participates in random selections for the state of Missouri and provides information and stats related to Medicaid therapy and billing.
  • Answers all related questions related to Medicaid therapy such as what therapy was provided, reason for therapy, frequency of therapy and when therapy occurred.
  • Provides all information for reimbursement purposes.

Data Collection:

  • Maintains data to determine progress and mastery for individual education programs and goals.
  • Reports quarterly and completes all required special education paperwork.
  • Adheres to local state regulation and ethical practices.

Student Interventions:

  • Participates in student intervention if speech and language concerns are identified.
  • Attends weekly meetings if students have speech and language concerns.
  • Provides strategies and ideas and screens students.

Licensing/ Certification:

  • Ability to interpret data outlined by the Missouri Department of Education.
  • Ability to interpret standardized assessments with fidelity.
  • Ability to analyze data for program planning and IP development.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in the area of speech and language.
  • Ability to use augmented communication devices.
  • Ability to use instruments for hearing screenings.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines for federal and state timelines.

Skills/Responsibilities: 

  • Hearing ability sufficient to evaluate a student's speech. 
  • Knowledge of DESE and IDEA criteria. 
  • Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Civil Rights Law.
  • Knowledge of Missouri State Plan for Special Education and Local Compliance Plan.
  • Knowledge of standards and indicators for eligibility for speech and language disorders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations. 
  • Committed to working with under-served students.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Therapy or Communication Sciences and Disorders; Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • Missouri State License as a Speech Language Pathologist.
  • 1 year of Speech and Language Pathology experience. 
  • Maintains ASHA and DESE certification.
  • Must acquire and maintain 30 professional development hours.
  • Must maintain 3-year certification maintenance.
  • Experience in an urban school setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual ability; English required and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout the school and classroom. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
