Physical Education Teacher

The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students ranging from PreK-12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Summary:

A physical education instructor must engage the class in both, team sports and individual activities while explaining the safe and correct way to engage in physical fitness. In addition to teaching physical fitness skills, the physical education instructor teaches social interaction skills.

Reports To: Building Principal

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Create a safe and positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms, dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Analyzes demonstrate and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, game rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities.
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits and other related duties to ensure an effective work environment. 
  • Attend all meetings with parents and give input concerning the creation of an Individual Education Plan or a 504 Plan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations. 
  • Committed to working with under-served students.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education.
  • Missouri State Certification in Elementary or Secondary Education. 
  • Experience in an urban school setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual ability; English required and Spanish preferred.
  • Highly Qualified Status (this status requires the following) …
    • Bachelor’s Degree.
    • Appropriate certification for the course/grade level being taught.
    • Documentation of content expertise in the area being taught. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities.
  • Able to maintain attention and a high level of energy or excitement for extended periods. 
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the school. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
