The Opportunity...
The ideal candidate will be passionate about environmental justice, sustainability, working with low-income communities, affordable housing, the environment, or just generally grounded in making the world a better place. A successful candidate must be a self-driven individual able to thrive in a fast-paced nonprofit environment that is organized yet flexible and able to adapt to changing needs, a good communicator with a curiosity for the technicalities of solar and wanting to go the extra mile to help their fellow human. Solar installations are a team effort and thus require team players who can work well independently. The position entails 40% - 50% of work in the community and 50% - 60% in the office.
  • Devise and implement an outreach strategy that targets qualified low-income communities in San Francisco, the East Bay, and South Bay and referrals from other areas identified by the DAC-SASH map.
  • Be the point person for clients for all aspects of the multistep client journey, including outreach, screening, home site visits, educating families about solar and the details of our program, walking clients through the application process and contracts, assisting clients with all related paperwork, and supporting past GRID clients when there are questions or problems
  • Responsible for meeting annual application goals and maintaining quality of work
  • Occasionally collaborate with the GRID Alternatives construction team, which is responsible for coordinating site visits and installations and troubleshooting for families.
  • Educate homeowners, prospective families, and the community about the benefits of solar and how to maximize their savings. This includes how to read their bill, energy efficiency, and generally increasing community awareness and acceptance of GRID Alternatives’ work and mission. This can be done by attending and presenting at meetings and events about the importance of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
  • Help create and maintain relationships with affordable housing developers, local government agencies, and community-based organizations who can assist in finding qualified families, as well as promoting or providing additional funding for our projects.
  • Manage projects using a SalesForce database through our multi-step process
What you need to bring to this role...
  • Experience living/working in economically disadvantaged communities and with diverse populations or at least ability to relate to and respect diverse populations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written ability to meet with partner organizations, speak to groups about GRID Alternatives’ work, educate low-income families about our services, and generally be a positive GRID Alternatives representative in the community)
  • Comfortable working independently and a team player, willing to pitch in as needed, such as with training SolarCorps Fellows, other staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Detail-oriented with documents and data entry
  • Proficient with computers and ability to quickly learn new programs
  • Regular driving is required, and the applicant MUST hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Occasional travel to the greater Bay Area region or other GRID offices may be required.
  • MUST be able to successfully register and maintain a Home Improvement Salesperson registration with the Contractors State License Board
It would be great if you also had...
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is strongly preferred; fluency in other languages is also preferred.
  • Outreach experience, particularly in the communities mentioned above (Similar or equivalent experience will be considered)
  • Experience or knowledge of the basics of solar energy, energy efficiency or a background in renewable energy is helpful but optional.
  • Experience working with Salesforce, MS Office, and G-Suite
  • Community outreach experience or sales/marketing/media experience
  • Organizational skills, follow through, flexibility, willingness to embrace change, and contributing ideas and energy to a growing organization.
Where you will sit and the places you may go…
This position may rarely require up to 25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects such as company-wide celebrations, team building exercises, etc. Availability to work nights and weekends may very rarely be required.
GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
