JOB TITLE: School Nurse

DEPARTMENT: Support Operations

JOB TYPE: 12-Week Assignment (July 31, 2024-October 24, 2024)

REPORTS TO: Director of Support Operations

POSITION OBJECTIVE: Major responsibility of the School Nurse is to provide healthcare and handle the daily health concerns that arise with students (Preschool-8th Grade).

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 7:45am-3:30pm

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee is a Christian with an authentic and mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ in both their professional and personal life with a calling and commitment to Christian education. Must be able to work independently, multi-task, deal with frequent interruptions, and nurture and maintain a positive relationship with parents, students and colleagues. A high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality must be maintained when dealing with student and staff information. The ability to prioritize workload and meet specified deadlines is critical. Attention to detail and a preference for working in a time and task intensive environment are essential. Please review our Statement of Faith Agreement.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  A Registered Nurse with Associate's Degree from an accredited nursing program is required (Bachelor's Degree preferred). A Valid Indiana License in Nursing and CPR certification is required. A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of nursing experience is required in a clinical setting (pediatrics or school nurse experience a plus). 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to use clinic/medical equipment
  • Possess basic pharmacological knowledge
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and act accordingly
  • Comfortable knowledge of universal precautions and ability to teach this to others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer skills and general knowledge of operating office equipment
  • Committed team player to both campuses, staff members, and mission of the school
  • Strong sense of professionalism and ability to keep information confidential 
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide professional assessment and treatment to students for optimal physical, social, and emotional health
  • Administer medications and initiate emergency first aid care to students and staff as required
  • Treat diabetic children that includes glucose monitoring, hypoglycemic interventions, hyperglycemic interventions, insulin pumps and administration, and dosage calculations
  • Assume responsibility and communicate with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies regarding student medical needs
  • Follow and monitor immunization records, screening programs, and medical alerts
  • Maintain student records and serve as a health education resource for students, staff, and family
  • Train the staff on specific medical procedures for students in the classroom with medical needs
  • Identify and assist in minimizing safety and health hazards at both campuses
  • Maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with and possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious body materials within both campuses
  • Responsible for reporting and managing guidelines as it relates to national, federal, state, and local agency requirements
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect
  • Maintain clinic equipment and order necessary supplies
  • Prepare field trip bags and maintain medical release forms
  • Support both school campuses when the staffing needs arise

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Indoors 90% of the time; must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time while working with a PC, and must be able to move supplies, copier paper, and above 50 pounds in special circumstances. Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position. Must be able to traverse campus, which includes paved areas, fields, and grassy areas. Must be able to use computer and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to discern low volume sounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to the elements when crossing campus. Change in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, using computer/monitor screen; may work alone, around or with others. Exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with event preparation and management responsibilities. Small interior office space with no windows.
