Position: Church Sexton
Purpose: To care for church building and ensure that it meets congregation’s and community partners' needs
Hours: 20 hours per week

Summary of Responsibilities:
1. Maintain physical health of church building and property
2. Ensure cleanliness of church spaces, following a weekly schedule while incorporating additional needs as indicated by the Pastor
3. Set up worship and meeting spaces for both regular and special events
4. Assist congregants, staff, renters, and guests in accessing building
5. Other duties as assigned

Hours:
1. The Sexton position is 20 hours/ week, and the schedule is Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00am - 5:00pm with a one hour lunch break, and Saturday from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Hours/ schedule modifications are possible, should the successful candidate need, in conversation with the search committee.

2. Greenwood provides space to various outside organizations. When these organizations are paying renters and the function takes place outside of the Sexton’s regular hours, the Sexton may choose to staff the event for additional pay, which Greenwood charges the organization and disburses to the Sexton.

3. The Sexton is not required to staff any non-Greenwood event that takes place outside of his/ her regular hours and does so solely at his/ her own choosing. If and when he/ she chooses not to staff an outside event, he/ she will notify Greenwood at least one week prior to said function so that Greenwood can identify other individuals to host the guest organization.

Tasks:
● Daily:

• Clean bathrooms
• Sweep, vacuum, or mop floors
• Replace supplies in bathrooms, kitchen, and meeting spaces
• Collect trash and recycling and manage internal trash and recycling system
• Dust or sanitize surfaces including desks, tables, and window ledges
• Maintain sidewalk and garden free from trash

● Weekly:

• With assistance from other staff and leadership, prepare space for worship services, including Sunday worship, homegoings, weddings, and holiday services. Preparation includes: turning on lights, managing heating and air, and arranging chairs
• Open and close building for church and partner organization functions within the Sexton’s regular hours
• Move all trash and recycling to curb, in compliance with DSNY requirements (twice weekly)
• Walk through all church spaces to ensure cleanliness. This includes worship spaces, meeting spaces, lower level, offices, kitchen, and bathrooms

● When needed:

• Regular maintenance on church building, such as replacing light bulbs, hanging signs and wall decor, and touching up paint when needed
• Cleaning light switches, baseboards, door knobs, and other frequently-used surfaces
• Shovel snow and ice sidewalk in compliance with DSNY regulations
• Perform minor repairs on church building and facilities, and notify leadership when additional maintenance is needed
• Participate in monthly staff meetings as well as other meetings as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
1. Commitment to Greenwood’s mission and values
2. Demonstrated ability to interact in a respectful and positive way with church staff, members, and visitors. This includes Christian courtesy, amiability, and collaborative attitude
3. Ability to take initiative and fulfill responsibilities without being prompted
4. 2-5 years experience in church or similar setting preferred
5. Ability to lift 30 lbs or more
6. Basic knowledge of plumbing and building repair preferred
7. Flexibility with work schedule when holidays, homegoings, or other extenuating circumstances require
8. Passing pre-employment background check

Supervision & Compensation:
The Sexton reports to the Pastor, and evaluations are done by the Pastor with collaboration from the Employment Committee of the Board of Trustees. Supervision takes place on a regular basis and will include in person meetings, phone calls, and impromptu meetings. Hiring, termination, and job description changes are handled by the Pastor and Board of Trustees. Compensation and PTO will be commensurate with experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $18.50 per hour
