GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Transitional Studies Mathematics department is a key part of the School of Academic Advancement. In the School of Academic Advancement, 150 faculty and staff deliver transitional/developmental, ESL, and orientation success courses as well as academic services that support students from admission to graduation. Often collaborating with each other, functional areas within the School of Advancement include Transitional Studies, ESL, and College Skills courses; advising and transfer; placement and academic testing centers; libraries and computer labs; creative inquiry undergraduate research; tutoring and coaching services; first year experience; civic engagement; financial education center; and an emergency food pantry.

The mission of the Transitional Studies Department is to prepare students for success in college-level classes through strengthening writing, reading, mathematical and critical thinking skills. Transitional Studies faculty teach and support up to 1,800 students per term in classes offered day, night, and weekend in face-to-face, online, hybrid, fast-track, and learning community formats. Providing instruction in developmental English, reading, and mathematics, they prepare students for college-level courses that lead to transfer or credentials. The department is also home to the college's English as a Second Language (ESL) program, which offers courses for students testing at an intermediate proficiency. The department includes 22 full-time faculty members and 2 staff members and relies on the contribution of approximately 40 adjunct instructors.

In this challenging role, you will support the Transitional Studies Department at Greenville Technical College. Duties may include any or all of the following:

  • Teach Transitional Studies Mathematics courses
  • Prepare lectures - syllabi - test
  • Grade - assess student work
  • Develop - implement new classroom strategies
  • Consult with students
  • Advise on academic progress
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics OR a Bachelor's degree with 24 credit hours in Mathematics

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated excellence in teaching and service beyond the department. One (1) year teaching experience in post-secondary education. Have the ability to work with colleagues and developmental students and convey knowledge in a form that students can understand. Adaptable to students' needs and different teaching situations, and be able to motivate students. Able to work in teams and independently.
