GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Greenville Technical College Respiratory Care Program is designed for student success with a balanced curriculum, including both respiratory and general education courses. The program is housed on the Barton Campus in the School of Health Sciences and students participate in clinic throughout hospitals in upstate South Carolina. The associate degree program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Faculty assist students with course content including the role of the respiratory therapist, health care concepts, and technical observations and skills. The four full-time and six part-time faculty provide the students with a strong background in the use of respiratory equipment, cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, and pathophysiology. The faculty teaches students through direct, hands-on, patient care experience in various hospitals and facilities throughout his/her clinical education. The faculty is an integral part of the success of our students by creating a stimulating and welcoming learning environment.

The philosophy of the educational approach of the Greenville Technical College Respiratory Care program is one of professional development. The respiratory therapist fills the role of a responsible health care practitioner in a growing and rapidly changing medical field of both acute and chronic patient care. Growth and commitment to optimum respiratory care is the foremost goal. The other primary objective of this program is to fill the need for respiratory therapists and to build and maintain a progressive respiratory care profession for the members of the community.

On average, the program has 2 cohorts of students (1st year and 2nd year students) averaging 30-35 students annually. Students graduating from the Respiratory Care Program are eligible to take both the entry level and advanced practitioner credentialing examinations offered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). Upon completion of the program, graduates MUST take and pass Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination (TMC) with the entry level score for entry into professional practice as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). After successful completion with the advanced score of the TMC Examination, graduates are eligible to attempt Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE). Upon successful completion of CSE Examination, graduates are awarded the Registered Respiratory Therapists credential.
