Greensboro Day School is Hiring a Seasonal Maintenance Near Greensboro, NC

REPORTS TO:

Director of Facilities (as needed)

FLSA JOB CLASSIFICATION:

Non-Exempt, 12 Month Position

JOB PURPOSE:

The Property and Plant Maintenance Technician provides a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of the facilities. The Property and Plant Maintenance Technician maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full productive use of facilities.

This is a 12-month, on-campus position, five days per week, Monday through Friday, and requires regular evening and weekend work.

The Property and Plant Maintenance Technician models the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs a variety of tasks that require the ability to, repair, install, service, and maintain building facilities, grounds and building equipment
  • Performs preventive maintenance of roofs, motors, exit/emergency lights, generator, service vehicle, etc.
  • Performs interior and exterior painting and a variety of plumbing repairs/maintenance, including restroom commode and sink fixtures, drinking fountains, snaking drain lines and rerouting of plumbing
  • Performs a broad spectrum of hardware (for doors) repairs and installations
  • Refinishes and makes repairs to furniture, tables and chairs
  • Performs small equipment repairs to replace vacuum parts and the like
  • Moves furniture, equipment, and materials around the school
  • Loads and delivers tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings and special events
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and vehicles
  • Safely works from ladders, scaffolding, and lifts
  • Keeps tools and equipment in good operating condition; regularly checks and inspects
  • Mows and trims lawns and fields; trims shrubs, plants trees, shrubs and flowers; cleans grounds
  • Performs custodial duties as requested by the Director of Facilities and Maintenance Supervisor
  • Assists in promoting the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in school buildings and grounds
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer, Director of Facilities, and Maintenance Supervisor

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all maintenance and repair projects
  • Helps teachers and students with recycling when needed
  • Assists in ensuring campus is safe for students and employees to return to school following inclement weather
  • Works beyond a 40-hour work week when workload requires
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of School and Director of Facilities

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma; associate’s degree in maintenance is preferred

  • 3-5 years of experience in construction or maintenance/repair for a large facility

  • Trained to operate a variety of hand and power tools and vehicles

  • Trained in safety procedures concerning ladders, scaffolding and lifts

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Personal qualities of credibility and unwavering commitment to Greensboro Day School’s mission

  • A sense of humor is appreciated


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Regular weekend, early morning, and evening hours are required. This position may be required to work when campus is closed and work outside during inclement weather conditions. This position must be available to communicate by phone. The noise level in this work environment is moderate to high.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position involves continuous physical activity and the job may be physically demanding. It requires, at times, heavy physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. The position may require the employee to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, and do repetitive tasks with few breaks. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
