Position Summary: Manages all aspects of native plant nursery operations, composting operations, online and in-person plant sales, farmers market participation, and annual downtown flower basket production. Assists in other operations and programs as able and needed.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Operations Manager is responsible for:
· All aspects of native plant nursery and composting operations at the Greenhouse Project’s Sustainability Hub.
· All aspects of online and in-person plant sales, farmers market participation during summer months, and downtown flower basket program and production.
· Preparing and managing annual production plan, operational budget, and management strategies for areas of responsibility to insure successful maintenance and growth of the Greenhouse Project’s revenue programs.
· Assisting Director of Programs with supervision of National and Statewide service volunteer programs (i.e. AmeriCorps) and part-time / seasonal employees.
· Accurate record keeping and ongoing administrative tasks for areas of responsibility.
· Supporting Marketing and Outreach efforts.
· Assisting with planning volunteer activities.
· Collaborating with education professional on agriculture curriculum design for areas of responsibility.
Production and Maintenance of Nursery and Composting Operations
· Plan and oversee daily operations of all native and drought-tolerant plant nursery activities.
· Plan and oversee daily operations related to composting and school / restaurant food waste recycling program.
· Manage growing, composting, and nursery operations to insure detrimental pests, insects, and harmful bacteria in growing environment are under control.
· Assist with outreach activities through participation on the Greenhouse Project Action Group on a regular basis.
Planning and Production of Other Revenue Programs
· Produce annual target of growing flower baskets for downtown beautification program.
· Plan and produce vegetable seedlings, herbs, and perennial flowers in greenhouse for online and in-person sales, including coordination of the Greenhouse Project’s Shopify online store.
· Observe environmental and food safety standards for agricultural and horticultural activities and pest management.
· Maintain records related to nursery and compost operations, flower basket production, and plant sales, including maintaining inventory counts on plants for sale.
Required Qualifications:
· Two years of experience working on a diversified agricultural operation, with a minimum of six months in a greenhouse setting.
· Knowledge of plant nursery and/or composting operations, as well as regenerative agriculture systems including IPM, irrigation, and soil fertility.
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in related field (Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related topics).
· Ability to relate, interact, and empower people of all ages from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
· Great communication and problem solving skills.
· Ability to work in all weather conditions, including high heat, low humidity, high winds, and snow.
· Demonstrated organizational skills.
· Physically able to do and serve as an example for physical farm related work.
· Valid Driver’s License and dependable vehicle.
· Complete required background and fingerprint check.
· Competency with Microsoft Word and Excel data entry and reporting.
· Must be able to lift safely 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience working with students (especially teenagers), volunteers, and/or special needs individuals.
· Experience using agricultural machinery (tractors, front loaders, etc.)
· Skills in irrigation set up and minor repairs/carpentry.
· Awareness of permaculture and diverse organic growing methods
· Experience managing interns or staff.
