Job Summary
The Medical Coder reviews outpatient medical diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10, CPT-4 and HCPCS coding classification systems to ensure billing requirements are met. Collaborates with providers and third party payers to resolve any coding issues.
Responsibilities and Duties
Manages the timely coding of diagnoses and procedures for outpatient accounts, using ICD-10, CPT-4, and HCPCS coding classification systems, to meet billing system requirements.
Works closely with providers, insurance companies, and other integral parties to uncover and discuss coding analysis results.
Collaborates with the billing department to ensure claims are processed in a timely manner.
Reviews coding denials and takes appropriate steps for resolution to resubmit the claim in a timely manner.
Accounts for coding and abstracting of patient encounters, including diagnostic and procedural information, significant reportable elements, and complications.
Researches and analyzes data needs for reimbursement.
Reviews and verifies documentation supports diagnoses, procedures and treatment results.
Qualifications and Skills
High School Diploma or equivalent. Certification as a Medical Coder. Two (2) years of experience in a health care setting. Experience working with insurance plans preferred.
Proficiency with computers, including MS Office, and ability to learn existing and new software systems, as determined by the organization
Strong verbal communication, customer service and interpersonal skills
Excellent cultural competency and cross-cultural communication skills
Critical thinking, analytical and decision-making skills to solve problems as they arise
Ability to work independently and cooperatively with the health care team to achieve team objectives
Ability to communicate complex information in a clear, effective manner for a general audience
Ability to remain calm in challenging situations
Ability to communicate effective and assertively while demonstrating compassion and empathy for patient’s individual situations
