Greater Farallones Association (GFA) is the primary nonprofit partner of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. GFA conducts joint research, conservation, and education to support healthy ecosystems in the Sanctuaries, which comprise one of the most diverse and bountiful marine environments in the world, an area of 4,581 square miles off the northern and central California coast. With approximately 30 staff members, GFAs annual budget of around $4M is supported by a diverse mix of government grants, program service contracts, private philanthropy, and donated services. This position is based in San Francisco located in the National Marine Sanctuary office in a beautiful historic building on Crissy Field in the Presidio, and is remote-hybrid.Greater Farallones Association aims to foster justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity within our organization, and in the broader fields of ocean conservation, environmental education, and nonprofit management. All staff members are expected to bring a demonstrated commitment to developing the skills needed to build and sustain an inclusive, thriving, and effective workplace.Reporting to the Executive Director, theDirector of Developmentis responsible for planning and executing the long-term strategic vision for GFAs success as the primary nonprofit partner to marine sanctuaries in Northern California. The position directs all fundraising and outreach efforts, including cultivating relationships with individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies. In further developing a strong base of support for GFAs mission, the Director of Development will be responsible for growing revenue from existing supporters and building a robust long-term major donor engagement and planned-giving program. This position manages the financial and human resources of the Development and Communications Department, including directly supervising staff and contractors. The position will require a high level of collaboration, communication, and coordination with the GFA program and finance staff as well as our sanctuary partners.Specific DutiesDevelop and implement the organizations fundraising programs to secure lasting financial support from individuals, foundations, government agencies, and corporationsDirect the effort to secure and manage government and foundation grants, including case development, maintaining awareness of funding opportunities, setting grant strategy, managing contract grant writers, participating in the drafting and review of proposals, and corresponding with fundersDirect GFAs annual giving program, and implement a recognition and stewardship planEnsure GFAs donors and donor prospects are engaged in a way that is meaningful and supports the successful solicitation, renewal, and upgrade of giftsDevelop cultivation and solicitation strategies for major donors and prospects, supporting communications led by GFA Board members and GFA staff membersPersonally steward a portfolio of existing major donors by providing timely, engaging communications to increase giving over timeUtilize CRM (Salesforce) and online payment processing (Click & Pledge) systems to track development efforts; work with CRM contractor to further improve database functionalitySupervise development staff to achieve the above goals, articulating expectations for work products around goals, objectives, timelines, quality, and efficiency; articulate and maintain standards for ethics and confidentiality; help ensure the continual development of a diverse, supportive, and sustainable workplaceContribute to GFAs justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts by engaging in planning and evaluation activities, participating in hiring panels and training workshops, and committing to fostering a culture of belongingPreferred QualificationsOver 3 years in a lead development role at a nonprofit organizationDemonstrated success in raising funds and visibility for a nonprofit organizationDemonstrated success in developing and implementing annual giving strategiesFamiliarity with and experience in moves managementGeneral knowledge, interest, or willingness to learn about ocean scienceAbility to work as a team member and be an effective communicatorStrong computer skills and experience with CRM systemsDemonstrated success in managing projects; ability to meet deadlines andadjust quickly to changing prioritiesExperience managing budgets and staff, including building strong, effective teamsCommitment to fostering an inclusive and healthy workplace that accepts and supports all staff members in bringing their authentic selves to our workplacePass a background checkProficiency with Salesforce is a plusEmployee Status and BenefitsThis is a full-time, exempt staff position with Greater Farallones Association.The starting annual salary is $85,000-$110,000 FTE, and the overall pay range is currently set at $85,000 $130,000, depending on the employees success in the role.
