JOB/POSITION TITLE:

Maintenance Supervisor

DEPARTMENT NAME:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief Maintenance Officer, the Maintenance Supervisor ensures that all coaches receive scheduled service, repair, and are available for revenue service on a daily basis. This position transmits work orders, ensures available training for employees, and performs record keeping work relative to employee attendance and vehicle maintenance. Maintains knowledge of service and repair procedures for all fleet vehicles and provides quality assurance check of coach condition prior to return to active service. Maintains a safe work environment for employees by monitoring adherence to written shop safety procedures. Makes recommendations to the Maintenance Management team for the resolution of problems related to materials, time, and space to perform quality and timely maintenance. Must be willing to remain on duty until relieved and be on call.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assigns and supervises work for hourly employees in assigned shop or shops as required.
  • Schedules and supervises repair of fleet vehicles and dispatching of road call mechanics.
  • Supervises day-to-day fueling, washing, and cleaning of fleet vehicles.
  • Prepares and monitors for accuracy and completeness, all daily employee work and time records. Maintain all maintenance inspections and repair records on coaches and furnish necessary reports.
  • Supervises, coaches, disciplines, and applies work rules consistently and fairly to all employees according to RTA policies and procedures, RTA Standards of Performance, and any applicable union contract.
  • Schedules required training of maintenance employees and assists employees in improving their job skills through coaching, mentoring or the use of other skilled personnel.
  • Works closely with the Maintenance Manager and Inventory Manager, regarding parts availability, parts quality, and warranty programs.
  • Requisitions parts and equipment for shop use or coach down situations.
  • Responsible for assisting in control of budget, inventory control, record keeping and job performance of Maintenance employees.
  • Models, facilitates, and encourages exemplary internal and external customer service, open communication, and teamwork among staff.
  • Facilitates the development of strategies to meet and/or exceed organizational and departmental performance goals and objectives.
  • May be required to work different shifts and/or be subject to other schedule variations to meet the department or organizational needs.
  • Requires punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Supports the missions and goals of RTA.
  • Routinely works with and develops confidential data such as employee files, counseling, and payroll documents.
  • Information specific to the Authority or Management environment.

  • Ability to give clear direction to employees within a changing environment.
  • Be accountable for efficient use of RTA time, your own time and that of maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain company records and ensure appropriate vehicle levels for daily fleet requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises the performance of hourly maintenance personnel in a Union environment.
  • Responsible for the development of maintenance personnel through the utilization of OJT (On Job Training) and internal shop class training. A formal apprenticeship style training may also be available which will require the Supervisor to track the employee’s progress.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Usually works in a temperature-controlled environment with additional time spent in a large transit shop with equipment and vehicles that may produce high noise levels.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Good manual dexterity and ability to sit and work at computer terminal for possible extended periods of time.
  • Willingness to and ability to work in a shop environment at times providing instruction on a one on one bases.

POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED SCHEDULE: Full time, some weekends required, any shift.

TRAVEL: Occasional travel

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory experience in a maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of engines, brakes, electrical, steering, HVAC, hydraulic and pneumatic systems as pertained to transit type vehicles, electric trolleys or heavy duty trucks.
  • Knowledge of peripheral equipment as related to transit systems.
  • Ability to read electrical/mechanical schematics and drawings.
  • Ability to utilize a fleet software program.
  • Ability to work within Excel spreadsheets, Word documents or other Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work with software programs for timekeeping, inventory, maintenance work orders.
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly, promptly and effectively to front line employees, over RTA’s radio system and to internal office staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement (preferred).
  • Associates degree in Electrical or Mechanical Technology related to buses or electric trolley vehicles (preferred).
  • A combination of experience and training will be considered as equivalent to an Associate’s Degree

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is an exempt, pay grade 15 position with an initial salary hiring range of $58,319 (minimum) to $72,901 (midpoint), dependent on qualifications and experience.
