Position Summary
This position provides overall store management and leadership for the organization with primary responsibility for smooth and effective store functioning. The incumbent is expected to meet/exceed established store sales quotas, ensure product availability, model, and maintain unsurpassed customer service, supervise employees, develop innovative sales strategies, and outreach activities and create and maintain a positive work environment. As a pivotal employee of Ten Thousand Villages Asheville, the Store Manager will internally and externally model and fully embrace the organization’s mission and values of integrity, respect, teamwork, collaboration, and courtesy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Store Management and Operations:
- Ensure that the store meets or exceeds established sales goals while managing the profit and loss statement to assure that budgeted reserves are achieved
- Manage inventory to ensure that adequate inventory levels are maintained, and all ordering, receiving, pricing, stocking, and claims are issued and processed in a timely manner
- Manage day to day store operations, including inventory levels, cash control and payables, processing of damages, paperwork, reports, and store supplies
- Anticipate and resolve customer service issues, while proactively following through on customer special orders and requests
- Assure acceptable store appearance, including merchandise displays and back-office areas
- Serve as visual merchandising lead by supervising and/or executing floor moves and maintaining the floor according to Ten Thousand Villages visual merchandising standards
- Manage and prevent loss by instituting appropriate policies and training for awareness
- Create in-store sales promotions consistent with budget availability
- Manage and assure effective execution of in-store sales events
- Review Ten Thousand Villages current advertising and promotional materials for decisions on those appropriate for the Asheville store
- Serve as main contact with Ten Thousand Villages regional sales manager regarding store operations
Staff Leadership and Development
- Reinforce the value of volunteer contributions through regular interactions and relationship development
- Provide day to day employee supervision utilizing a team approach with regularly scheduled meeting, continual communication, and ongoing collaboration
- Coordinate the recruitment, interviewing, selection, training, and scheduling of employees
- Develop and motivate employees to provide superior customer service utilizing Ten Thousand Villages customer service standards and principles as well as effective selling techniques
- Conduct employee performance reviews at required intervals, soliciting, and incorporating feedback from appropriate stakeholders and submitting to the Personnel Committee of the Board for review before sharing with employees
Community Events and Outreach
- Primarily responsible (in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant Store Manager) for community networking and outreach activities
- Develop a network of contacts for use in events and outreach projects
- In collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant Store Manager, develop, plan, and execute off-site sales
- Evaluate off-site sales programs to maximize impact
Board Responsibilities
- Meet with the Chair of the Board of Directors on a regular basis between board meetings
- Create a balanced annual store budget based on anticipated growth, changes in expenses and other income generating streams
- Prepare monthly written reports and present at Board of Director meetings
- As part of the budgeting process, develop for board approval overall sales, marketing, and advertising strategies, plans for future educational events (in collaboration with Volunteer Coordinator), in-store sales promotions and purchases of marketing materials
- Collaborate with the accountant and/or Board Treasurer on all matters related to sales, bill documentation/payment and month end reports
Miscellaneous Duties
- Attend regional meetings and workshops as needed to remain updated on new and changing Ten Thousand Villages merchandise, policies, and procedures
- Make regular reports to staff, volunteers, and Board
- Provide backup coverage for employees and volunteers as needed
- Assume other duties as may assigned be from time to time
Education and/or Experience
- 3-5 years of retail store management required, preferably in a non-profit environment, including responsibility for sales, marketing, merchandising and overall store management
- 1-3 years of supervisory experience required
- Volunteer management experience preferred
- BA/BS Degree, preferably in sales or marketing
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Google suite as well as computer-based inventory control and point-of-sale software
- Working knowledge of Pinterest, Facebook, and other social media

- Ability to work flexible hours, including opening and/or closing shift at least three times per week, minimum of two Saturdays and two Sundays per month, annual inventories, and entire holiday season (October – December). Time off varies based on store coverage needs.
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Able to stand, sit, walk, kneel, reach, and talk for up to 6-8 hours daily
- Able to spend up to 6 hours computer keyboarding daily
