Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board Inc is Hiring a Nursing Assistant Near Rapid, SD

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for performing nursing assistant duties in support of the high quality patient care provided to Oyáte Health Center (OHC) patients.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the primary contact between the patient and the Primary Care Provider (PCP): answers telephone and greets visitors; takes messages; refers to appropriate personnel; assists with effective and efficient schedule coordination, verbal and written communication, information research and transfer, assists patients in contacting other departments as needed including Mental Health, Tribal Health Nurses, Women Infants and Children Programs and other Tribal organizations.
  • Responds to all patient requests promptly: recognizes gross changes in patient conditions and reports to RN/LPN as appropriate, acts swiftly in emergencies and assists as directed, and maintains BLS.
  • Observes patient flow in order to eliminate long periods of waiting and/or identify patients that may have been over looked due to their disability or misunderstanding of appointments procedures, policies, etc.
  • Keeps patients aware of possible delays in patient care during such events as patient accidents, traumas, seasonal outbreaks of disease, or other circumstances which increase the number of patients to be seen by providers.
  • Provides basic nursing care to patients: interviews patients for chief complaint, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, LMP (if appropriate); assists with transferring and transportation of patients receiving care at OHC; assists with lifting, diagnostic test preps, specimen collection and patient teaching; and, ensures accurate information is documented within the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Enters results from patient surveys on depression, tobacco use, exercise, and intimate partner violence into the electronic health record.
  • Logs pertinent information into the EHR, initiates requisitions for lab and x-ray.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients; drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment; hands instruments and materials to provider as directed; assists provider with exams as requested including chaperoning, obtaining supplies and equipment; and, cleaning up after patient examinations.
  • Processes, assembles, prepares, and sterilizes, stores, and issues sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment.
  • Manages medical supply items; performs decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization various reusable patient items and manages disposable supplies.
  • Routes slips, forms and other documents to the appropriate departments.
  • Provides staff support: sorts and distributes mail; maintains office equipment; maintains office and medical supply inventory and reorders as needed; and, maintains team files and records.
  • Creates, composes, edits, produces and/or distributes varied correspondence, reports, and other materials; obtains, organizes, and plans suitable presentation of content; reviews work for format consistency, grammatical construction and typographical accuracy; presents finished materials for review, or distributes.
  • Assists with patient transfers; initiates transfer packs; copies patient information as directed; escort’s patients to and from other departments.
  • Keeps work area neat and orderly; assists with the maintenance of supplies and cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality and safeguards medical information.
  • Attends and participates in nursing staff meetings and in-service education programs.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Supervisory Controls

The supervisor provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. When there are new, difficult, or unusual assignments, the supervisor provides additional, specific instructions for including suggested work methods or advice on source material available.

Guidelines

There are established procedures for doing the work and a number of specific guidelines are available as a resource.

The employee may be required to use judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures for application and in making minor deviations to adapt the guidelines to specific cases. The employee may also determine which of several established alternatives to use. Situations to which the existing guidelines cannot be applied or significant proposed deviations from the guidelines are referred to the supervisor.

Guidelines include GPTLHB, OHC, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, and deviations must be authorized by the supervisor.

Complexity/Scope of Work

The work consists of related steps, processes, or methods. The decision regarding what needs to be done involves various choices that require the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations. Actions to be taken or responses to be made differ in such things as the source of information, the kind of transactions or entries, or other differences of a factual nature.

The work involves the execution of specific rules, regulations, or procedures and typically comprises a complete segment of an assignment or project of broader scope. The work product or service affects the accuracy, reliability, or acceptability of further processes, services, and/or patient care.

Contacts

The personal contacts are with employees throughout the organization and are generally

engaged in different functions and kinds of work, and may be representatives from various levels. Other personal contacts at this level include contact with partner organizations, Tribal affiliate organizations, and members of the general public.

The purpose is to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts, or to resolve operating problems by influencing or motivating individuals or groups who are working toward mutual goals and who have basically cooperative attitudes.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, including exposure to contagious diseases. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

This is a non-supervisory position that may provide functional direction, guidance and instruction to other employees when necessary. This position possess authority to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. Instructs employees in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments. The employee may perform the same type of work as other employees, but may be responsible for performance of the more technically difficult, controversial, or sensitive work assigned to the unit or group.

Education/Experience/Certificates/Credentials

  • High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal and background check, and a pre-employment drug screen.
