Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission is Hiring a Fisheries Research Biologist Near Odanah, WI

JOB SUMMARY:
The Inland Fisheries Section at GLIFWC is seeking a dedicated Fisheries Research Biologist to join our team and contribute to the conservation of and relationship with aquatic resources. The Fisheries Research Biologist will primarily assist in fieldwork, data collection, writing, and research activities related to fisheries projects. The employee will work alongside biologists, technicians, and graduate students at GLIFWC and member tribes.

Projects include:

  • Multi-being/species movement study in Mille Lacs Lake, 1837 Ceded Territory of MN
  • Terrestrial and aquatic habitat surveys and recommendations for improvement
  • Surveys of adult and juvenile ogaa/walleye in the Ceded Territories of the Upper Midwest

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary

  • Write a scientific manuscript on the spawning site fidelity of ogaa (walleye) in Mille Lacs Lake.
  • Assist biologists and graduate students with thermal tolerance experiments in a wet lab setting.

Secondary

  • Conduct field surveys to collect data on fish populations, habitats, and environmental conditions.
  • Assist in the deployment and maintenance of monitoring equipment such as nets, traps, and tagging systems.
  • Perform fish sampling, identification, and measurements in accordance with established

protocols.

  • Compile and organize data collected in the field for analysis and reporting.
  • Assist in laboratory work including sample processing, data entry, and analysis.
  • Participate in habitat assessments and restoration projects as needed.
  • Participate in cultural events.
  • Engage in interagency meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve project goals and objectives.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures during fieldwork and laboratory activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in fisheries research, fieldwork, telemetry, wetlab and/or mesocosm experiments, writing (scientific and popular press articles) or related activities is preferred.
  • Strong interest in aquatic ecology, conservation, and natural resources.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote field locations and under varying weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, data management software, and R programming language.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and insurable.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites as required.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is desirable.
