Job description-Medical Clinical Assistant-Tech/Scribe Ophthalmology

This full or part- time position at Great Lakes Eye Care is primarily located at our Mishawaka and Niles offices with occasional travel to our St. Joseph and South Haven locations.

Position Qualifications:

Physical Qualifications

  • Must be able to sit, bend and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Must have good hearing
  • Must have legible handwriting
  • Must be physically able to push a wheelchair with an adult occupant and assist them in and out of the examination chair (Exceptions may be made to this criteria depending on specific duties)

Basic Functions

  • Initiates the subjective and objective parts of patient visits
  • Solicits chief complaint and elements of complaint
  • Performs tests necessary to investigate complaint
  • Review and update patient histories
  • Perform ancillary testing
  • Responsible for assisting the doctor in the examination room. Responsible for transcribing information into patients’ charts during the doctor’s examination (EMR). Answers patient questions, provides patients and families with information regarding the doctor’s plan, next steps, and at-home care procedures. Assists in minor surgical procedures, both sterile and non-sterile.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Patient education: show informational videos, instruct patient on the proper use of their medications, explain procedures, carry out the doctors’ orders and answer patient questions
  • Must take telephone calls from patients and other doctors. Must be able to assess the progress reports, carry out physicians orders, triage urgent calls
  • Instill drops and ointments, record examination assessments and plans in chart
  • Clean up after patients in exam rooms and restrooms
  • Summarize patient records from other physicians
  • Clean and maintain equipment
  • Stock and maintain clean, organized exam rooms
  • Crossover duties when requested by doctor or supervisor
  • Pull and file charts
  • Able to use eye wash station
  • Able to perform basic histories; VA, tensions, BATs, etc
  • Work designated late nights and closing equipment and rooms
  • Special projects as requested by the doctor or supervisor
  • Understand how to operate battery packs & indirects
  • Office protocol for handling sharps & blood borne pathogens
  • Completing incident reports and understanding what to do in those instances
  • Understand office safety procedures
  • Have the understanding of working the phones, faxes, copiers and computers
  • CPR and defibrillator certified (strongly recommended)
  • Know how to perform, various diagnostic tests (As described on “Technician Skills Check List”)
  • Chart Presentation
  • Be able to perform visual field testing
  • Understand qualification criteria for various procedures
  • Perform proper and complete charting
  • Document patient contacts (I.e. phone calls, walk-ins, etc)
  • Understand a spectacle prescription
  • Be able to neutralize a pair of glasses
  • Have an understanding of ocular anatomy
  • Understand the basics of muscle balance and perform basic testing

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $16.50 per hour
