Responsibilities

Under general direction of the Business Office Manager, the Switchboard Operator coordinates and supervises activities in order to expedite hospital communications. The Switchboard Operator also operates the Avaya software communications to relay incoming, outgoing and inter-office calls and performs miscellaneous hospital communications/clerical duties, as well as Business Office clerical duties.
Essential Functions:

• Utilizes appropriate verbal communication skills when conversing with patients and other persons, both on the phone and in person, to convey a high level of personal attention and promote customer satisfaction.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient information in all communication methods by strictly adhering to Hospital Confidentiality of Information policies.
• Promotes efficient and accurate processing of patient and department information by utilizing good communication skills among the Department Manager, PBX Coordinator and other hospital personnel.
• Works directly with Department Manager to resolve of any problems involving patient complaints, communication system or problems.
• Answers calls within reasonable amount of time using good communication skills, and connects caller with proper party in order to expedite hospital communications.
• Pages authorized personnel over the intercom system or through individual pagers; announces close of visiting hours and other notifications, i.e., fire alarms and Code 9.
• Records all transactions in a clear and accurate manner to provide for efficient retrieval of information in order to collect monies due in a timely manner.
• Monitors the Switchboard board schedule.
• Updates on-call schedule for the hospital.
