Description

POSITION PURPOSE

Assists in providing world class service to guests at the pool, by proactively promoting a safe and enjoyable experience that exceeds guests expectations. Responsible for the safety of all guests in the pool area. Sees that pool rules and regulations are adhered to and regulates guest conduct, ensuring the safety of the pool area. Responsible for constant and ongoing monitoring of the pools, hot tub, and slides and acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of guests in the event of an emergency. Provide emergency care and treatment, as needed. Performs designated rescue practices as needed.

This is a Seasonal Position. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Promote the rules and regulations of the pool, hot tub, and slide area. Be aware of possible situations where guests are not able to safely participate in an activity and inform supervisor/manager.
  2. Monitor the swimming area for dangerous conditions, unusual or unsafe activities, and swimmers who are struggling.
  3. Maintain direct contact with patrons and communicates with them in an effective manner, including enforcing all pool rules and regulations.
  4. Use appropriate rescue techniques if observing swimmers in need of assistance.
  5. Provide assistance to injured guests until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  6. Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to manager; complete safety training and certifications.
  7. Follow all company and safety and security policies and procedures; report any maintenance problems, safety hazards, accidents, or injuries; complete safety training and certifications.
  8. Opens and closes the pool, ensuring the safety of all participants while in the pool.
  9. Conducts facility inspections, completes checklists and reports any concerns to supervisor.
  10. Assists guests with questions regarding the resort, activities and general information
  11. Welcome and acknowledge all guests according to company standards, observing the 15, 10 rules.
  12. Obtain, fold, and stack towels according to company procedures.
  13. Wash, mop, and clean the pool deck.
  14. Maintain clean pool deck area, including picking up trash.
  15. Follow all of the Safety and Sanitation Guidelines set forth by the CDC and GPR including but not limited to all of the COVID-19 State and County ordinances
  16. Must be able to work flexible schedules including weekends and holidays

Other:

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Employees with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required.

Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with Westin/Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of the hotels facilities. Employees who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the hotel:

  2. Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information; protect company assets.
  3. Support all co-workers and treat them with dignity and respect.
  4. Support team to reach common goals.
  5. Comply with quality assurance expectations and standards.
  6. Speak with others using clear and professional language, and answer telephones using appropriate etiquette. Perform other reasonable job duties as requested by Supervisors.

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays, dependent upon resort needs.
  • Must be available June through August, as scheduled, without summer vacation leave.
  • Successfully complete the International Lifeguard Training Program and ongoing training requirements.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Ability to work both independently and in team procedures.
  • Must be knowledgeable of principles and techniques of: Preventive lifeguarding, water rescues, first aid, and CPR.
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance, analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective course of action.
  • Deal effectively and perceptively with the guests, and promote team work with colleagues.
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Physical Demands

  • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Assist with moving, lifting, carrying, and placing of objects weighing in excess of 75 pounds.
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift. Move at a speed that is required to respond to work situations (e. g., run, walk, jog).
  • Visually inspect tools, equipment, or machines (e. g., to identify defects).
  • Visual acuity and auditory ability to maintain constant observation of pool, hot tub, and slide area and to respond to critical incidents.
  • Physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations.
  • Grasp, turn, and manipulate objects of varying size and weight, requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
  • Move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces and steps.
  • Move up and down a ladder.
  • Move up and down stairs and/or service ramps.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education:

  • High School or equivalent

Experience

  • Previous Lifeguarding experience preferred.

Licenses or Certificates

  • Must be able to obtain lifeguard certification upon offer for hire.
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Grooming

All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per Westin/Sheraton Carlsbads standards.
