Description

DEFINITION:

The RN will serve as a member of the PACT multidisciplinary team and is responsible for conducting psychiatric assessments, assessing physical health needs and making appropriate referrals to community physicians. This position will manage and administer medication in conjunction with the psychiatrist as well as providing a range of treatment, rehabilitation and support services and sharing shift-management responsibility with other staff. Employees assigned to a position in this class are placed under supervision where the work assignments are well-detailed and well-prescribed by the supervisor. The Department Head for this position is the Chief Clinical Director of Special Programs. This position is immediately supervised by the Integrated Health Services Administrator and/or PACT Team Lead.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is immediately supervised by the Integrated Health Services Administrator and/or PACT Team Lead:

  • Provide ongoing assessment of clients’ mental illness symptoms and clients’ response to treatment.
  • Make appropriate changes in treatment plans to ensure immediate and appropriate intervention is provided in response to changes in mental status or behavior which put clients at risk (e.g. suicidality).
  • Provide symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms.
  • Provide direct clinical services to clients on an individual, group and family basis in the office and community settings.
  • Teach behavioral symptom-management techniques to alleviate and manage symptoms not reduced by medication and to promote personal growth and development by aiding clients to adapt to and cope with internal and external stresses.
  • Provide multiple-stage individual and group treatment in the office and in community settings.
  • Develop a trusting relationship with clients so that they may freely discuss substance use and its effect on mental and physical health and daily functioning.
  • Participate in setting treatment goals and plans with clients to reduce or abstain from substance use and to learn replacement behaviors as applicable.
  • Provide ongoing assessment, problem solving, side-by-side services, skill training, supervision (e.g. prompts, assignments, monitoring, encouragement) and environmental adaptations to assist client with activities of daily living.
  • Provide individual supportive therapy (e.g. problem solving, role-playing, modeling and support), social-skill development, and assertiveness training to increase client social and interpersonal activities in community settings.
  • Performs other nursing treatments and procedures in accordance with approved nursing techniques and as prescribed by physicians,
  • Administers oral and injectable medications, according to Oklahoma licensing laws and physician orders.
  • Completes medication profiles and inventories.

General Job Requirements

  • This job does require the selected candidate to possess a current and valid driver’s license, to have a clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Maintain current certification in Therapeutic Options, CPR and First Aid.
  • Employee must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or other management as requested.
  • Meet or exceed “satisfactory” expectations at any scheduled job performance evaluation.
  • Must be willing to submit ODMHSAS Code of Ethics and Training Application, be approved by ODMHSAS to attend such training and meet ODMHSAS requirements before employment begins.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential and expected for this position.

Must perform the specific job duties as listed above to meet position expectations. Quality of work will be evaluated through training, skill, or special purpose.

Qualifications


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current licensure in good standing in the state of Oklahoma, and all other states where license is held.*

2 years of supervised experience in a mental health treatment setting, preferred.

*An interim work permit or a temporary license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education will be accepted so long as it remains valid. However, a valid permanent license must be obtained prior to the completion of the probationary period as set by the Board.

An expectation of core competencies in relation to individuals with co-occurring disorders.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of psychiatric and medical nursing therapy, practices, techniques and procedures.

Knowledge of administration and effects of commonly used medications, particularly psychotropic medication.

Knowledge of facilities, services and practitioners in the local medical community.

Knowledge of theories, principles, and processes of case management, individuals, marital and family counseling and psychotherapy.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of social work and/or psychology and of current social and economic problems.

Excellent drug administration skills.

Skilled in giving injections

Exceptional Oral and Written Communication skills are necessary in presenting ideas clearly and accurately. Selected candidate must be able to read and comprehend the English language.

Excellent Organizational skills in planning and maintaining nursing care and supplies.

Exceptional Relationship Building Skills in maintaining therapeutic relationships with patients, in maintaining effective working relationships with other nursing personnel and developing strong professional relationships with practitioners and other service providers in the local community.

Cooperation and mature judgement are key components in working with clients, staff, management and other professional groups to ensure the best quality treatment is provided for each individual client.
