Position Details:
This Merchandising leader at Grainger ensures that we improve our onsite search results ensuring world class customer journeys. As the business leader of our onsite search function – the Director of Search guides the team members and processes that support hundreds of millions of keyword searches and the subsequent customer experiences annually on Grainger.com. Core to this role will be a breadth of knowledge about search logic and technology, web analytics, User Experience (UX), Grainger’s products and MRO merchandising principles. The ability to collaborate and partner with leaders across technology, analytics, UX and Merchandising teams will be a necessity to succeed in this role. You will report to the Sr. Director of Merchandising Content and Search. This position is located at our Lake Forest IL headquarters.
You will need to develop an understanding of our business, the customers that we serve and our end-to-end Merchandising processes. You will need to partner across the business with stakeholders to influence groups and ensure our search and find experiences across our multi-channel publications (desktop, mobile, print) are the best in the industry.
You Will:
  • Provide strategic direction and solutions in creating world class onsite search customer experiences.
  • Coach the leaders and team members of the Search team.
  • Develop a framework that dictates the approach, analysis, and communication of onsite search KPIs. Partner with our Web Analytics teams to ensure we have the right flow of results-based data to lead the search operation.
  • Meet or exceed onsite search performance metrics such as search-to-cart percentage, null percentage, search-related customer satisfaction, and other search-related metrics.
  • Build search team vision to align with Merchandising goals.
  • Build metrics-driven goals annually to ensure our team stays focused and continues to improve.
  • Build the processes to improve onsite search and on-page content to maximum relevance and search results including identifying popular terms and relevant search results.
  • Implement continuous improvement across Publishing content creation teams.
  • Partner with Grainger Technology Group to build world class search technologies that support the search team’s processes.
  • Partner with our User Experience (UX) teams to ensure the search and find customer journey’s match our expectations for terms and concepts input by our customers – applying product knowledge and merchandising best practices.
  • Engage with Merchandising Content & Search Leadership to help create an end-to-end approach to search and find that includes our product information, product content and search function to create the right goals.
  • Partner Merchandising strategy to develop structure and processes to ensure we create the best customer experience in the industry with the best possible keyword search results.
You Have:
  • BS/BA degree in engineering, technology, marketing, or business is ideal. MBA preferred.
  • 10 years experience in industrial product management, merchandising, marketing, new product development, or technical sales.
  • Demonstrated leadership and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated successful project management skills.
  • General technical skills with Search technologies and understanding User Experience (UX) terminology and best practices.
  • Can translate data into clear insights.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and MRO and industrial customers.
  • Continuous improvement and process orientation.
  • Ability to develop relationships both internal and external to the company.
  • Ability to align and partner across the business to achieve financial and strategic goals.
  • Ability to develop employees at every level to their full potential including developing successors to your current position.
  • Ability to produce and present MRO industry statistical and financial analysis.
  • Comfort in building and delivering presentations to executive, staff, and field audiences.
